Basketball at the Pacific Games has been played since 1963. It has also been contested at the Pacific Mini Games and, from the games at Port Vila in 2017, under the 3x3 format.

1997 South Pacific Mini Games

The 1997 South Pacific Mini Games were held at Pago Pago in American Samoa from 11 to 22 August 1997. It was the fifth edition of the South Pacific Mini Games. It was much larger than previous editions, with an almost doubling of the number of medals awarded compared to the 1993 South Pacific Mini Games. The impressive performances by Nauru in weightlifting continued in Pago Pago, with the tiny nation finishing on top of the unofficial medal table after winning 33 gold.

2017 FIBA Womens Asia Cup

The 2017 FIBA Women's Asia Cup was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Asia and FIBA Oceania at the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain. The tournament was held from 23 to 29 July in Bangalore, India. Before this edition, the tournament was known as the FIBA Asia Championship for Women, and only involved FIBA Asia members. FIBA Oceania teams Australia and New Zealand, as well as Fiji competed in the tournament for the first time.

The 2018 FIBA Polynesian Basketball Cup was an international basketball tournament contested by national teams of the newly formed Polynesia sub-zone of FIBA Oceania. The inaugural edition of the tournament was hosted by Samoa from 19 to 24 November 2018. Matches were played at the NUS Gymnasium.

The men's and women's tournaments for 3x3 basketball were played at the 2019 Pacific Games on 18–20 July 2019 at the Faleata Sports Complex in Apia, Samoa. The 3x3 format of the game had been introduced to the Pacific Mini Games in 2017, but this was the first time it had been contested at the main Pacific Games.
