An American in Madras is a feature-length documentary film directed by Karan Bali. The film highlights American-born Ellis R Dungan's [1] pioneering contribution to the then-developing Tamil Film Industry in South India between 1935 and 1950. Synopsis

The film primarily traces Barton born American Ellis R. Dungan's years in South India from 1935 to 1950. During this period he made quite a name for himself as a successful director in the Tamil film Industry. The great MG Ramachandran (MGR) was introduced in Dungan's debut film as well, Sathi Leelavathi (1936), and among the 13th feature films that Dungan directed, they include famed Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi's Sakuntalai (1940) and Meera (both in Tamil (1945) and Hindi (1947)). Besides his feature filmmaking, Dungan also served the Madras Government as their official photographer during World War II and photographed many key moments around the Indian Independence movement. After leaving India in 1950, Dungan returned regularly to the country as an expert on the wildlife films and television serials made in India like Harry Black and the Tiger (1958) and Tarzan Goes to India (1962). The film traces his entire Indian connection till 1994, when on what was to be his last trip to India. the Tamil film industry felicitated him for his pioneering contribution to its early development. Screenings and Film Festivals

The film had its first ever screening on 1 December 2013 on Ellis R Dungan's 12th death anniversary at the LV Prasad Film and TV Academy auditorium, Chennai. It has since then had various screenings in Chennai including it being part of Madras Day celebrations in 2014, besides showings in Bangalore and Mumbai as well. Vani Jairam Indian singer (born 1945)

Vani Jairam, also credited as Vani Jayaram, is an Indian singer. She is best known as a playback singer in South Indian cinema. Vani's career started in 1971 and has spanned over five decades. She has done playback for over thousand Indian movies recording over 20,000 songs. In addition, she has recorded thousands of devotionals and private albums and also participated in numerous solo concerts in India and abroad.

Ellis Roderick Dungan was an American film director, who was well known for working in Indian films, predominantly in Tamil cinema, from 1936 to 1950. He was an alumnus of the University of Southern California and moved to India in 1935. During his film career in South India, Dungan directed the debut films of several popular Tamil film actors, such as M. G. Ramachandran in Sathi Leelavathi, T. S. Balaiya, Kali N. Ratnam and N. S. Krishnan.

Despite marrying Rana, she follows her own way of living, which is unacceptable to her husband and his family.

Sathi Leelavathi is a 1936 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by Ellis R. Dungan and written by Madras Kandaswamy Mudaliar. It is based on S. S. Vasan's novel of the same name, which had been serialised in 1934. M. K. Radha stars as Krishnamurthy, a man from Madras, who is lured into drinking alcohol by an acquaintance. Believing he murdered his friend in a drunken stupor, Krishnamurthy flees to Ceylon while his wife and daughter, played by M. R. Gnanambal and M. K. Mani respectively, are reduced to poverty. T. S. Balaiah, M. G. Ramachandran, M. V. Mani and P. Nammalvar appear in supporting roles.

11th Chennai International Film Festival Film festival in Chennai, India

The 11th Chennai International Film Festival took place in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India from 12 to 19 December 2013. The event was organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) with support from the Government of Tamil Nadu. The festival was curated by actress-director Suhasini Maniratnam and inaugurated by Kamal Haasan and Aamir Khan. The Japanese drama Like Father, Like Son marked the beginning of the fest.

She is one of the leading playback singers in today's film music scenario. She has sung for leading music directors like Ilayaraja, Harris Jayaraj, Yuvan Shankar Raja, A. R. Rahman, Bharathwaj, Deva, S. A. Rajkumar, and Bharani. She emerged as the "Best Voice of 2002" in the TV Reality Show Rajageetham conducted by RAJ TV. She is the first playback singer to win the Vikadan Awards started in 2004, which was juried by late Sujatha. A. R. Rahman has featured her in 2 songs in the soundtrack of Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.
