Anabel Abarca is an American politician,who served in the Chicago City Council as alderperson for the 12th ward from 2022 to 2023. She was appointed to the position by Mayor Lori Lightfoot and confirmed by the City Council in December 2022,following the retirement of George Cardenas. [1] [2] [3] She ran for re-election to a full term,but lost to Julia Ramirez. The 12th ward is on Chicago's southwest side,and includes portions of Brighton Park,McKinley Park,and Little Village.
Abarca is a native of the Northwest Side of Chicago,and is the daughter of Mexican immigrants. [2] [3] She graduated from Taft High School in Norwood Park,and subsequently earned a bachelor's degree from DePaul University,a Master of Public Administration degree from Arizona State University,and a Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Abarca worked on Tammy Duckworth's congressional campaign in 2011,and served as an aide to U.S. Representative Mike Quigley. She later served on the boards of several non-profit organizations. From 2012 to 2016,she served as chief of staff for 12th ward alderman George Cardenas. [2] [3]
In June 2022,Cardenas announced his intention to resign later in the year after winning a primary for a seat on the Cook County Board of Review. [4] Abarca was one of four people who applied to fill the position for the remainder of the term,and was selected for appointment by Mayor Lori Lightfoot on December 12,2022. [2] The City Council approved her appointment in a 44–0 vote on December 14. [1] She named public safety and city services as her top priorities upon taking office. [1] [2] Abarca was a candidate for a full term in the 2023 election and was endorsed by Cardenas,but lost to challenger Julia Ramirez. [5] [3]
Abaraca has lived in the McKinley Park neighborhood of Chicago since 2015. [3]

The Chicago City Council is the legislative branch of the government of the City of Chicago in Illinois. It consists of 50 alderpersons elected from 50 wards to serve four-year terms. The council is called into session regularly,usually monthly,to consider ordinances,orders,and resolutions whose subject matter includes code changes,utilities,taxes,and many other issues. The Chicago City Council Chambers are located in Chicago City Hall,as are the downtown offices of the individual alderpersons and staff.

Lori Elaine Lightfoot is an American politician and attorney who was the 56th mayor of Chicago from 2019 until 2023. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Before becoming mayor,Lightfoot worked in private legal practice as a partner at Mayer Brown and held various government positions in Chicago. She served as president of the Chicago Police Board and chair of the Chicago Police Accountability Task Force. In 2019,Lightfoot defeated Toni Preckwinkle in a runoff election for Chicago mayor. She ran again in 2023 but failed to qualify for the runoff,becoming the city's first incumbent mayor to not be reelected since Jane Byrne in 1983.

The 2023 Chicago mayoral election was held on February 28,2023,to elect the mayor of Chicago,Illinois. With no candidate receiving a majority of votes in the initial round of the election,a runoff election was held on April 4. This two-round election took place alongside other 2023 Chicago elections,including races for City Council,city clerk,city treasurer,and police district councils. The election was officially nonpartisan,with winner Brandon Johnson being elected to a four-year term which began on May 15.

She beat Anabel Anarca in the 2023 election for the office. She campaigned for holistic public safety strategies and implementing a “community-driven process”to vet industry and businesses. This was the first time Ramirez ran for Chicago public office. She previously worked in Chicago Public Schools as a social worker,with a background in community activism.
