Ando Meritee (born July 30, 1974) is an Estonian Renju player currently residing in Taiwan. He was Renju World Champion in 1993, 1999, 2001, 2005, and won the Team World Championship in 2014. [1] [2] He has also won European Renju Championship 3 times, in 1996, 1998, 2006. [3] In 1999 Ando Meritee played a "match of two titans" against the Japanese legend Shigeru Nakamura, winning the match 3,5-2,5.

Renju is a professional variant of gomoku. It was named renju by Japanese journalist Ruikou Kuroiwa (黒岩涙香) on December 6, 1899 in a Japanese newspaper Yorozu chouhou (萬朝報). The name "renju" means "connected pearls" in Japanese. The game is played with black and white stones on a 15×15 gridded go board.

Shigeru Nakamura is a Japanese Renju player. He won Renju World Championships in 1989 and 1991, and Renju Team World Championships in 2012. Up to 2020, he has been the Japan's Meijin title holder for 30 years. In 2019, Nakamura was awarded the 7th Lifetime Meijin title by the Japanese Renju Federation. Up to 2021, Nakamura has won the All Japan Renju Championship for 8 times, and the Kanto Renju Emperor Tournament for 14 times. In 1999, Nakamura played a "match of two titans" against the Estonian world champion Ando Meritee, with the result of 2,5-3,5.

Vladimir Sushkov is a Russian Renju player. He won the Renju World Championships in 2009 and 2017, and the Renju Team World Championship in 2000, 2004 and 2006. Up to 2009, Vladimir Sushkov has won the Russian Renju Championship for 3 times.

Cao Dong is a Chinese Renju player. He won the Renju World Championship in 2011 and 2019, and the Renju Team World Championship in 2010 and 2018. Up to 2022, Cao Dong has won the Chinese National Renju Championship for 4 times and the Chinese National Team Renju Championship for 4 times.

Ants Soosõrv is an Estonian renju player and coach. As a member of the Estonian team, he won the Team World Renju Championships for two times in 2008 and 2014. Since 2005, Ants Soosõrv had become the general secretary of the Renju International Federation, until he retired in 2022.

The European Renju Championship is an official Renju championship organized by the Renju International Federation (RIF). It was started in 1994.
