Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad. With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1980 consisted of a total of six sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 19 to 29 July 1980 of the coast of Tallinn, in that time an illegally annexed part of the USSR at the Baltic Sea. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses.
Hubert Raudaschl is an Austrian sailboat manufacturer and former Olympic athlete. He has participated in nine Olympic games between 1964 and 1996. Raudaschl has competed in the second most Olympic Games, behind Canadian Ian Millar and tied with Soviet/Latvian Afanasijs Kuzmins.

Sir Durward Randolph Knowles was a sailor and Olympic champion from the Bahamas. He won the gold medal in the Star class at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, together with Cecil Cooke. He won the bronze medal in the same class at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He had previously competed for the United Kingdom in the 1948 Olympics, finishing in 4th place in the Star class together with Sloane Elmo Farrington. Representing the Bahamas, Knowles also won gold in the 1959 Pan American Games star class. He is one of only five athletes who have competed in the Olympics over a span of 40 years, along with fencer Ivan Joseph Martin Osiier, sailor Magnus Konow, showjumper Ian Millar, and sailor Paul Elvstrøm.
Sloane Elmo Farrington was a Bahamian competitive sailor and Olympic medalist. He won a bronze medal in the Star class at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, together with Durward Knowles. He also won gold in the 1959 Pan American Games star class. He had previously represented Great Britain at the 1948 Summer Olympics.

Gabrio Zandonà is an Italian sailor, world champion in the 470 class in 2003.
Jorge João Zarif is a Brazilian sailor, competing in the Finn class. Son of Brazilian Olympic sailor Jorge Zarif Neto, after finishing 20th at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Zarif was world champion in both junior and senior levels, winning gold at the 2013 Youth Championship in Cyprus and the 2013 Finn Gold Cup in Estonia. His second Olympic appearance in 2016 had Zarif improve handily, with a fourth place.
Andrea Foglia Costa is a Uruguayan sports sailor. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the Women's Laser Radial class, finishing in 38th place.

Andreas Papadopoulos is a Greek former sailor, who specialized in the two-person dinghy (470) class. Together with his partner and five-time Olympian Andreas Kosmatopoulos, he was named one of the country's top sailors in the double-handed dinghy for the 2008 Summer Olympics, finishing in the twelfth position. A member of the local sailing club in his native Thessaloniki, Papadopoulos trained most of his sporting career under the national federation's head coach for the men's 470, Kosmatopoulos' former partner from Barcelona 1992 Athanasios Pachoumas.
Robert White is a British sailor. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1988 Summer Olympics.
