Andrew Thomas Blowers OBE FRSA is a British geographer and environmentalist and Emeritus Professor of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at the Open University. [1]

Biography

Blowers attended Colchester Royal Grammar School and won an Open Exhibition to read Geography at Durham University. [2] After periods teaching at Newcastle Polytechnic and Kingston Polytechnic he joined the Open University, where he eventually became Dean of Social Sciences. [3]

His academic work has focused on environmental protection, particularly nuclear waste management. In 1993 he campaigned against the opening of the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant at Sellafield. [4]

Honours

He received an OBE for services to environmental protection in the 2000 Birthday Honours. [5] He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2004. [2]

Jim Al-Khalili British theoretical physicist, author and broadcaster

Jameel Sadik "Jim" Al-Khalili is an Iraqi-British theoretical physicist, author and broadcaster. He is professor of theoretical physics and chair in the public engagement in science at the University of Surrey. Dorothy Miell Professor of Social Psychology

Dorothy Evelyn Miell is a professor of Social Psychology, and since March 2010 has been Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Vice-Principal, at the University of Edinburgh. Before moving to Edinburgh, she was Dean of Social Sciences at the Open University. Her research focuses on collaboration and communication patterns, recently in the context of creative endeavours.

Laurence Williams (nuclear engineer)

Laurence Glynn Williams, is a British nuclear engineer, health and safety expert, and academic. He specialises in nuclear safety and security. From 1998 to 2005, he was Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations. From 2010 to 2014, he was Professor of Nuclear Safety and Regulation at the University of Central Lancashire. He has served as Chairman of the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management in the Department of Energy and Climate Change since 2012, and Chairman of the Defence Nuclear Safety Committee in the Ministry of Defence since 2013. He has been described as "one of the world's leading experts in nuclear safety regulation".

Sir Charles Peter 'Pete' Downes is a British biochemist and chairman of Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. Downes served as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee from 2009 until 2018. He is the former Head of the College of Life Sciences and co-founder of the Division of Signal Transduction Therapy (DSTT) alongside Sir Phillip Cohen.
