Andrew Francis McBride (4 January 1869 - 1946) [1] was a physician and Mayor of Paterson, New Jersey from 1908 to 1913. There is a statue of him alongside those of Alexander Hamilton, Garret Hobart and Nathan Barnert, outside of Paterson City Hall. He was elected as a Democrat. [2] He was New Jersey Labor Commissioner.

He was born on 4 January 1869 in Paterson, New Jersey to Hugh McBride of Ireland.[ citation needed ]

John Laing Leal was an American physician and water treatment expert who, in 1908, was responsible for conceiving and implementing the first disinfection of a U.S. drinking water supply using chlorine. He was one of the principal expert witnesses at two trials which examined the quality of the water supply in Jersey City, New Jersey, and which evaluated the safety and utility of chlorine for production of "pure and wholesome" drinking water. The second trial verdict approved the use of chlorine to disinfect drinking water which led to an explosion of its use in water supplies across the U.S.

The 1981 New Jersey gubernatorial election was held November 3, 1981. Republican Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly Thomas Kean narrowly defeated Democratic U.S. Representative James Florio, 49.46%-49.38, following a recount. Kean's margin of victory was 1,797 votes out of more than two million votes cast. As of 2024, the 1981 gubernatorial election remains the closest gubernatorial contest in New Jersey history.
