Andrew Guthrie (born 18 January 1961), previously Andrew Merryweather, is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy and Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He used his step father's surname Merryweather during his playing career, then later changed back to his birth name. [1]

A Doncaster recruit, he made his only appearance for Fitzroy in the 1982 VFL season, against Melbourne at Waverley Park. [2] [3] He got another chance to play VFL football six seasons later, when he was called up by Essendon, having spent the previous years playing local football. [1] Used as a defender, he appeared in the first five rounds of the 1988 season. [1] [3]

His sons, Cameron Guthrie and Zac Guthrie play for Geelong. [1]

The AFL Australian Football League is the top professional Australian rules football league in the world. The league consists of eighteen teams: nine based in the city of Melbourne, one from regional Victoria, and eight based in other Australian states. The reason for this unbalanced geographic distribution lies in the history of the league, which was based solely within Victoria from the time it was established in 1897, until the time the league expanded through the addition of clubs from interstate to the existing teams starting in the 1980s; until this expansion, the league was known as the VFL (Victorian Football League).
