Early life and career

Andrew was born in West Orange, New Jersey, he gravitated toward music at the age of 13. After playing piano and drums in high school bands, Hollander was mentored by the late Yusef Lateef , who nabbed him to play piano on 3 of his albums with the likes of Kamal Sabir, Rene McLean Jr., and Avery Sharpe . He moved to New York City where he worked with filmmaker Adrienne Shelly and musicians, including singer David Johansen , a member of glam rock band the New York Dolls and drummer, Charley Drayton , who has collaborated with Bob Dylan and Fiona Apple .

Hollander scored the 2007 independent film Waitress , [4] and along with writer/director Adrienne Shelly , co-wrote "Baby Don't You Cry (The Pie Song)." Later that year, Hollander appeared on a Hollywood Reporter list of composers on the "cusp of A-list status". [5] Hollander also composed the scores for Marc Meyers My Friend Dahmer [6] and Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me . [7] [8] [9] His scores often draw on both orchestral music and rock; for the latter he often uses bands local to him in New York City. [1]

Hollander has been recognized alongside contemporaries Hans Zimmer and Michael Giacchino in Variety magazine. [10] His score for Words on Bathroom Walls was included in the Film Music Institute's list of Best Scores of 2020. [11]

Among his other credits are scoring several projects for HBO, including the Emmy award-winning series A Child's Garden of Poetry , [12] the Emmy nominated documentary It's a Hard Truth Ain't It , [13] which screened at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, and most recently the film Adrienne (NY Times Best of 2021 list). [14] He co-wrote/produced the end-title song for the animated film Leap! with Carly Rae Jepsen and recently completed the score for Cathryne Czubek's Once Upon a Time in Uganda (Grand Jury Prize DOC NYC 2021) [15] about maverick Ugandan filmmaker Isaac Nabwana, aka "the Quentin Tarantino of Africa."

He has written/produced songs for a diverse mix of artists from Carly Rae Jepsen and New Politics to Brian Elmquist of The Lone Bellow and Celine Dion [16] (#1 album in 31 countries).
