Andrew McMillen is an Australian freelance music journalist based in Brisbane, Australia. In 2014, University of Queensland Press published his debut book Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs.

Early life and education

McMillen grew up in the southern Queensland, Australia city of Bundaberg, the son of two teachers. [1] He relocated to the state capital city, Brisbane, in 2006 to commence a communication studies degree at the University of Queensland (UQ). [2]

Writing

McMillen's debut book Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs was published in 2014. [1] [3] [4] David Messer of The Sydney Morning Herald called the work "a brave and important book" and praised McMillen for being "careful to provide a balance of experiences, including non-drug takers." [5]

Schapelle Leigh Corby is an Australian woman who was convicted of smuggling cannabis into Indonesia. She spent nine years imprisoned on the Indonesian island of Bali in Kerobokan Prison. Since her arrest Corby has publicly maintained that the drugs were planted in her bodyboard bag and that she did not know about them. Her trial and conviction were a major focus of attention for the Australian media.

Mick Harvey Musical artist

Michael John Harvey is an Australian musician, singer-songwriter, composer, arranger and record producer. A multi-instrumentalist, he is best known for his long-term collaborations with Nick Cave, with whom he formed The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

The Bali Nine were nine Australians convicted for attempting to smuggle 8.3 kg (18 lb) of heroin out of Indonesia in April 2005. The heroin was valued at around A$4 million and was bound for Australia. Ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were sentenced to death and executed on 29 April 2015. Six other members, Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush and Martin Stephens, were sentenced to life imprisonment and another, Renae Lawrence, to a 20-year sentence but was released after the sentence was commuted in November 2018. The Indonesian authorities reported on 5 June 2018 that Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen had died of stomach cancer.

Holly Throsby Australian musician (born 1978)

Holly Sarah Throsby is an Australian musician and novelist. As a solo artist Throsby has issued six albums. She was nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Female Artist in 2006 for Under the Town; and in the same category in 2008 for A Loud Call. In 2011, she was nominated for an ARIA Award for Best Children's Album for See!, her album of alternative children's songs. Throsby's song 'Aeroplane' from her 2016 album After a Time has had over 30 million streams on Spotify. Throsby has toured extensively both internationally and in Australia, with artists including Bill Callahan, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Joanna Newsom, Low, The Handsome Family, Paul Kelly, Sun Kil Moon, Devendra Banhart and The Tallest Man on Earth.

David Messer is an Australian cartoonist. He is best known for his comic book adaptations of Shakespeare's Macbeth and The Tempest, both published in Australia by Random House in late 2005. Each book features the full text, complete with footnotes, and close to 1,000 illustrated panels per book. He has produced a full-colour version of Romeo and Juliet.

DZ Deathrays Australian band

DZ Deathrays are an Australian dance-punk trio from Brisbane, Queensland. Composed of Shane Parsons (vocals/guitar), Lachlan Ewbank and Simon Ridley (drums), they put out two EPs before releasing their debut album, Bloodstreams, in April 2012. The album went on to win the Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album award at the 2012 ARIA Awards. To date they have released four studio albums: Bloodstreams (2012), Black Rat (2014), Bloody Lovely (2018) and Positive Rising: Part 1 (2019).
