Andrew S. Breidenbaugh is an American librarian and director of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System. He has worked to bring online databases, eBooks, streaming media, music, and courses to the system. [1]

Education

Breidenbaugh began his education in 1988 at Towson University, Towson, Maryland, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Asian Studies. He was a member of the Phi Alpha Theta history honors society as well as the National History Honor Society. In 1990 he finished his Master of Arts in History at the University of Maryland. His area of concentration was Middle East and Islamic History. In 1996, he completed his education at the University of South Florida School of Information, where he received his degree in Library and Information Science. [2]

Career

Before graduating from USF, Breidenbaugh managed a Barnes & Noble bookstore for several years. Towards the end of his graduate studies, he worked for the City of Tampa Archives and Records Center, where he accessed, arranged, and described records of the Tampa Fire Department. From 1996 to 1999, he held his first job as a librarian at the USF Tampa Campus Library where he was an adjunct reference librarian. It was in this position where he began his work with library technology and online services. Nearly concurrent to this time (1997–1999), Breidenbaugh began working for the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System at the New Tampa Regional Library as a reference librarian. He was also an adjunct instructor for the USF School of Information, where he taught Basic Information Sources & Services, Internet Research Skills, and Internet Resources. [2]

From 1999 to 2002, Breidenbaugh was a senior librarian for Electronic Reference & Information, a call-in and email reference service for the Tampa-Hillsborough library system. From 2002 to 2006 he was a Principal Librarian at the John F. Germany Public Library, Tampa’s main library, and continued his focus on library technology and internet resources. Following his time at the John F. Germany library, he was named chief librarian for the South Tampa Region. In April 2014, he became manager of library technology and collections, which included oversight of the library’s collection process and its budget. In February 2015, Breidenbaugh was named director of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System, [3] and oversees its $36.5 million annual operating budget, 25 libraries, and two mobile outlets. Organizations and volunteering

Breidenbaugh is an active member of the American Library Association and the Florida Library Association. He also volunteers with FIRST, judging for FIRST Tech Challenge events in the Tampa Bay area. [5]

Alice G. Smith Lecture

The Alice G. Smith Lecture, established in 1989, is sponsored by the University of South Florida, School of Information. The lecture is an annual recognition of a scholar or author whose achievements have been instrumental in the development of librarianship or information studies. The lecture series honors the memory of the School's first director, Alice Gullen Smith, known for her work with youth and bibliotherapy. The Lecture Fund was created with the purpose of memorializing the visionary work of Dr. Smith, who was central to the School's first accreditation by the American Library Association in 1975. Florida Library Association archivist, Bernadette Storck has provided an oral history of the development of libraries in Tampa, Florida that details the contributions of Dr. Smith including her establishment of the Tampa Book Fair that encouraged thousands of children to foster a love for books and reading

The Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL) is a public library system based in Hillsborough County, Florida. THPL is part of two larger library networks, the Tampa Bay Library Consortium, and the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative which includes Temple Terrace Public Library in Temple Terrace, Florida, and Bruton Memorial Library in Plant City, Florida. There are 25 branches of the Tampa–Hillsborough County Library System, not including digital-only and mobile-only services. Services provided by the THPL include internet access, public meeting room spaces, interlibrary loans, a Bookmobile, a Cybermobile for Spanish speakers, technology classes, adult literacy programs, and downloadable eBooks. Drive-thru windows for returns and hold pick-ups are located at the Jimmie B. Keel and the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Libraries. In 2017, THPL introduced the new HAAL Pass, which gives access to certain library resources to all students in the Hillsborough County Public Schools System. Students use their student ID number to use different online databases, borrow up to three physical items and read eBooks. The Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System is also a part of Hillsborough County government. On January 1, 2018 the library cooperative became one of the largest in the country to go fine free. Overdue fees for borrowed materials were eliminated with the implementation of the "Just Bring It Back" initiative. In 2019 the cooperative received the FLA Library of the Year Award. Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library was recognized for its community focused initiatives when it "reorganized its staffing model and eliminated overdue fines, yielding $1 million in savings while increasing access to library resources and expanding opportunities for community engagement through unique, scalable programs.

John F. Germany Public Library

John F. Germany Public Library is the flagship library of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL), as well as a member of the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, and a member of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium.

Colleen Lunsford Bevis (1916–2013) was a prominent children's advocate in Hillsborough County, Florida, USA. She was active for six decades and instrumental in founding the Children's Board of Hillsboough County. She became Florida state president of the Parent Teachers Association.

Vicki L. Gregory

Dr. Vicki L. Gregory is professor at the School of Information at the University of South Florida (USF). She and was director of the School from 1999 until 2007. Her fields of specialization include: academic libraries, digital librarianship, technical services, information science, library networking, library automation, and collection development. She currently teaches Introduction to Library Administration, Collection Development/Maintenance, and Digital Libraries. Prior to teaching at USF Dr. Gregory was Director of Systems and Operations for the Auburn University at Montgomery Library. She is currently President of Beta Phi Mu. The Maureen B. Gauzza Public Library, formerly known as the Upper Tampa Bay Regional Public Library, is part of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL), as well as a member of the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC). It is a 26,000 square foot facility located at 11211 Countryway Blvd. in Tampa, Florida. In addition to books, newspapers and magazines, the library provides DVDs, music, and internet access, as well as a variety of programs and activities and meeting rooms.

The Arthenia L. Joyner University Area Community Library is a member of the Tampa–Hillsborough County Public Library System (THPL) and the Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC). It is a 15,000 square foot facility located adjacent to Muller Elementary Magnet School on 13619 North 22nd St. In addition to serving as a public library, the location also serves a partnership library with the Hillsborough County Public School system. The library doubles as a media center for the Mueller Elementary Magnet School during school hours and as a public library during all operating hours. In addition to books, the library offers a variety of meeting spaces, computers, technology instruction, literacy and family events.

New Tampa Regional Library Public library in Tampa, Florida

The New Tampa Regional Library is a 25,000 square foot public library located in the Hunter's Green area in north central Hillsborough County, Florida. It is a single-story building and the 19th facility in the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System. New Tampa Regional Library is located directly between Hunter's Green Elementary School and Benito Middle School.

University of South Florida Tampa Library

The University of South Florida Tampa Library is the main research library for the University of South Florida. Housing over 1.3 million books, academic journals and electronic resources, including 52,000 e-journal subscriptions, 443,000 e-books, and over 800 databases, the library has more than 2 million visitors each year. The library offers tutoring and writing services, laptops, a career resource center, and course reserves. The facility houses several special and digital collections, including literature, oral histories, photographs, artifacts, and the university archives. The current Dean of USF Libraries is Todd Chavez.

Helen Virginia Stelle
