Angela Christine Bridgland

Angela Christine Bridgland (born 1952) is an Australian teacher-librarian, library educator, academic, consultant and former board member and Fellow of Australian Library and Information Association. She is recognised for her contributions to higher education course development and staff development. [1]

Career

Bridgland taught at the Tasmanian and Melbourne Colleges of Advanced Education and University of Melbourne. [1] She has been involved in senior management at University of Melbourne Libraries since 1994, including as Directory of the Library and University Librarian. [1] [2]

Bridgland served on the Victorian Branch Council of Australian Library and Information Association between 1982 and 1984, before becoming Branch president in 1985. [3] She served on the Australian Library and Information Association Board of Education from 1989 until 1994. [3]

In 1987 Bridgland was awarded a Fellowship at Library and Archives Canada, studying staff development. [4] She has written widely on higher education staff development, including her Masters thesis on library instruction for teaching staff and her PhD thesis on Australian academic and state library staff. Education for librarianship, including for paraprofessional library workers, varies around the world, and has changed over time. In recent decades, many institutions offering librarianship education have changed their names to reflect the shift from print media to electronic media, and to information contained outside of traditional libraries. Some call themselves schools of library and information science, or have dropped the word "library" altogether.

Mary Helen Mahar (1913–1998) was an American librarian known for her work in school libraries. She was active in state and national library and education associations. She served as president of the New York Library Association in 1950. Throughout her career Mahar wrote about and implemented her philosophy of the importance of instructional materials in student learning. Mahar believed that professional librarians must do everything possible to meet individual needs and that school librarians must eschew a reputation for only organizing, housing and circulating books.

Anne Harrison (1923–1992) was an Australian librarian. The Anne Harrison Award of ALIA Health Libraries Australia was established as a call to remembrance of Harrison's work and a medium for encouraging others to make their own contributions to the development of health librarianship in Australia.
