Angela Ferrell-Zabala is an American reproductive rights, gun control, and social justice activist who serves as the inaugural executive director of Moms Demand Action. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Ferrell-Zabala's early career included community organizing positions at several social justice organizations, with a focus on outreach to faith communities. [5] In 2011–12, she was the director of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice's Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom project, conducting reproductive rights outreach on college campuses. [6] [7] [8] Ferrell-Zabala was also an organizer for Community Change, and the Community Voting Project. [9]
In 2014, Ferrell-Zabala joined Planned Parenthood as Director of African American Leadership and Engagement. [10] [11] [12] She was subsequently appointed the National Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. [13] [14]
Ferrell-Zabala joined Everytown for Gun Safety, Moms Demand Action's parent organization, in 2019 as Chief Equity, Outreach and Partnerships Officer. [15] [9] After serving in the role for 18 months, she was appointed Senior Vice President of Movement Building for Everytown. [16] [17] [18] Ferrell-Zabala was appointed the Moms Demand Action's first executive director on April 27, 2023. [19]
Ferrell-Zabala identifies as Christian and LGBT. [5] Ferrell-Zabala and her wife, Fernanda Ferrell-Zabala live in Washington, D.C., with their four children. In 2022, she shared in a New York Times profile about LGBT families that she had befriended SumOfUs Executive Director Emma Ruby-Sachs at a nonprofit leadership retreat in 2016, only to later discover their daughters were half-siblings, having used the same sperm donor. Created to honor the legacy of Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, it is the Federation's highest honor. Abortion in Wisconsin has been legal since September 18, 2023, and is performed in Madison, Milwaukee and Sheboygan through 22 weeks gestation. However, elective abortions in Wisconsin are under dispute after the overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court of the United States on June 24, 2022. Abortion opponents cite an 1849 law that they claim bans the procedure in all cases except when the life of the mother is in danger. However, lower level courts have argued that the law only applies to infanticide and not consensual abortions. The enforceability of the law is disputed and being considered by the state courts. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin announced that they would resume abortion services in Madison and Milwaukee on September 18, 2023. Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin later announced that they would resume abortion services in Sheboygan on December 28, 2023.
Abortion in California is legal up to the point of fetal viability. An abortion ban was in place by 1900, and by 1950, it was a criminal offense for a woman to have an abortion. In 1962, the American Law Institute published their model penal code, as it applied to abortions, with three circumstances where they believed a physician could justifiably perform an abortion, and California adopted a version of this code. In 2002, the California State Legislature passed a law guaranteeing women the right to have an abortion "prior to viability of the fetus, or when the abortion is necessary to protect the life or health of the woman". In 2022, California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 1, which amended the Constitution of California to explicitly protect the right to abortion and contraception by a margin of 33.76%.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-abortion government officials in several American states enacted or attempted to enact restrictions on abortion, characterizing it as a non-essential procedure that can be suspended during the medical emergency. The orders have led to several legal challenges and criticism by abortion-rights groups and several national medical organizations, including the American Medical Association. Jackson Women's Health Organization, No. 19-1392, 597 U.S. 215 (2022), is a landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the court held that the Constitution of the United States does not confer a right to abortion. The court's decision overruled both Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992), returning to individual states the power to regulate any aspect of abortion not protected by federal statutory law.
Proposition 1, titled Constitutional Right to Reproductive Freedom and initially known as Senate Constitutional Amendment 10 (SCA 10), was a California ballot proposition and state constitutional amendment that was voted on in the 2022 general election on November 8. Passing with more than two-thirds of the vote, the proposition amended the Constitution of California to explicitly grant the right to an abortion and contraceptives, making California among the first states in the nation to codify the right. The decision to propose the codification of abortion rights in the state constitution was precipitated in May 2022 by Politico's publishing of a leaked draft opinion showing the United States Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization.
