Animaze - Montreal International Animation Film Festival is an annual film festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada dedicated to the celebration of animation in all forms. Now going into its 8th edition, the next edition will take place August 2020 ANIMAZE presents animated film of all genres from around the world which may have limited theatrical releases.

The festival's premier edition was held on November 18–20, 2011 and was built around core events [1] which all subsequent editions will contain:

International film contest

Animaze's first objective is to bring animation professionals from around the world together, to showcase animated content from around the world in the hub of animation industry. Animaze awards a various prize to the winning films as determined by a panel of judges and a "Audience Favorite" as determined by the viewers. [1] [2] [3]

Saturday morning cartoon charity show

In an effort to give back to the community, Animaze Festival dedicates one of its shows for a charity screening that pays tribute to an important era in North American animation, the Saturday Morning Cartoon. Each year, Animaze selects a year and a specific television network and highlights the best shows from that line-up with all the proceeds going towards the charity of their choice. [1] [2] [3]

Student shorts contest

To help get local talent involved in the festival, Animaze holds a Student Shorts contest for animation schools in and around the Montreal area. This event pits school vs. school in an old fashion battle-royal. Each school must submit a collection of shorts from its student body and the schools are judged by their cumulative submission. The judges for this event are representatives from each of the schools in which they rate all the shorts entered except those from their own institution. The school whose combined shorts acquire the highest grade wins the top prize which is an Oscar type trophy and bragging rights for the year as the "Best Animation School" in town. [1] [2] [3]

The contest also recognizes and honors the three individual shorts that scored the highest overall mark. The individual winners receive an award certificate and prizes to help them in the progression of their studies.

The grand prize awarded is held in high regards by the film schools as they are not being judged or awarded a prize from the Animaze Festival but rather from amongst their peers and it is the other schools that declare the winning animation program.

Master class

Animaze Festival invites a guest director to address important issues within the animation industry. The lecture is preceded by a feature which the guest speaker was involved with. [1] [2] [3]

Classic film tribute

To honor animated films of yesteryear, Animaze plays tribute to ground-breaking film which is celebrating an anniversary by screening it again for its fans on the big screen. If possible, the film will be shown in it original 35mm and people involved in the film's creation will be invited to the event. [1] [2] [3]

<i>Nicktoons Film Festival</i>

The Nicktoons Film Festival was an annual event that was created by producer Fred Seibert and produced for its first three years by his Frederator Studios. The festival featured a selection of animated shorts from around the world. Shorts selected for the festival had the chance to be aired on Nicktoons Network, online and to be showcased at a live event in Los Angeles in October. Several prizes were awarded each year. Animators under 18 years old were eligible to enter the Greater Creator Contest. 2009 was the final season of the festival.

Ishu Patel is an animation film director/producer and educator. During his twenty-five years at the National Film Board of Canada he developed animation techniques and styles to support his themes and vision. Since then he has produced animated spots for television and has been teaching internationally.

<i>Random! Cartoons</i> Television series

Random! Cartoons is an American animated anthology series that aired on Nicktoons. Much like Oh Yeah! Cartoons, it was created by Fred Seibert and produced by Frederator Incorporated and Nickelodeon Animation Studio. It premiered on December 6, 2008, and ended on December 20, 2009.

The history of Iranian animation, which began in its modern form in the mid 20th century in Iran, can also be traced back to the Bronze Age.

Janet Laurie Perlman is a Canadian animator and children's book author and illustrator whose work includes the short film The Tender Tale of Cinderella Penguin, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 54th Academy Awards and received a Parents' Choice Award. Her 13 short films have received 60 awards to date. She was married to the late animation producer Derek Lamb. After working with Lamb at the National Film Board of Canada in the 1980s, they formed their own production company, Lamb-Perlman Productions. She is currently a partner in Hulascope Studio, based in Montreal. Perlman has produced animation segments for Sesame Street and NOVA. Blechman's adaptation of The Soldier's Tale for PBS's Great Performances. She has also taught animation at Harvard University, the Rhode Island School of Design and Concordia University. To Build a Fire is a 2016 French animated short film directed by Fx Goby adapted from the 1902 and 1908 short story "To Build a Fire" by Jack London. The film has been presented in a number of festivals including the Cannes Film Festival, the Anibar International Animation Festival, the New Orleans Film Festival and the Rhode Island International Film Festival where it won the prize for best animation.

Ashkan Rahgozar is an author, director and filmmaker of Animation. He is founder and chief executive of Hoorakhsh Studios. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in graphic design and master of arts degree in illustration.

<i>Falafel Cart</i> 2019 animated short film

Falafel Cart is a 2019 animated family short drama film produced by RoyalTales and directed by Abdullah Al-Wazzan with an original score by Dan Phillipson and sound design by Andrew Vernon. The short blends stop motion animation with traditional and some computer animation. In 2019, the film was submitted for the 2020 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film making it Kuwait's first short film to ever be submitted to the Academy Awards. In 2020 The film earned an official selection at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in the best of the world program. In 2021 the film won best animated short at the Burbank International Film Festival. In 2019 the film won best international short film at the Los Angeles Animation Festival.

Abdullah Al-Wazzan is a film director, screenwriter and film producer. He was born in Kuwait City, Kuwait in 1990. Al-Wazzan developed an interest in filmmaking in his early preteens. At the age of 17 he studied Architecture, And graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 2012. He went on to create the animated short film Falafel Cart (2019) which was officially submitted to the 92nd Academy Awards in the animated short film category. The film was officially selected at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival and won best international short film at the Los Angeles Animation Festival. In 2021 Al-Wazzan won best animated short film at the Burbank International Film Festival. Falafel Cart received nominations at D.C. Independent Film Festival, Palm Springs International Animation Festival, Southampton International Film Festival and Ajyal Film Festival. And was officially selected at Athens Animfest, Sonoma International Film Festival, Rabat International Author Film Festival and Montreal International Animation Film Festival.
