Anita Lo is an American chef and restaurateur. In 2001, she was named by Food & Wine magazine one of ten "Best New Chefs in America". [1]

Biography

Early life

Anita Lo, a second-generation Malaysian American, grew up in Birmingham, Michigan. [2]

She graduated from Concord Academy and then from Columbia University, where she earned a degree in French literature. [3] While a student at the culinary school L’Ecole Ritz-Escoffier, she interned with top French chefs Guy Savoy and Michel Rostang. [1]

Career

After completing culinary school in Paris, Lo returned to New York where she worked at several restaurants including Chanterelle, Can, a French-Vietnamese restaurant, and Maxim's. She then moved to Mirezi restaurant, where she earned headlines and rave reviews from restaurant critics, including Ruth Reichl from The New York Times. [5]

In 2000, Anita Lo and her business partner Jennifer Scism opened Annisa in New York's Greenwich Village. Annisa received a two-star review from The New York Times , Lo was named to Food & Wine magazine's list of the ten “Best New Chefs in America”, and The Village Voice named her the “Best New Restaurant Chef.” [5] In 2006, Annisa was awarded a Michelin star in the first Michelin Guide for New York City. In 2005, Anita Lo co-founded Rickshaw, a dumpling bar with several locations in New York City. She left Rickshaw in 2010, saying that she wanted to devote more time to the recently re-opened Annisa and to her other professional interests. [7] In 2008, she opened Bar Q, a barbecue-Asian fusion restaurant in Greenwich Village. Bar Q received favorable food reviews but somewhat critical reviews for service and was not universally well received by residents in the neighborhood. It closed after ten months. [8]

On July 4, 2009, Annisa was destroyed by fire. The restaurant reopened in April 2010 at the same location. [9] The reopened restaurant was reviewed again by The New York Times and again received two stars. [10] Scism also left Annisa in June 2010, leaving Lo as the sole owner. In 2011, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation recognized the restaurant's excellence with a Village Award. [11] Annisa received three stars from The New York Times in 2014. [12]

In 2015, Anita Lo was the first female guest chef to cook for a State dinner at the White House. She prepared a 4 course meal for the visiting Chinese president, Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan. In May 2017, after 17 years of business, she closed the Annisa on financial grounds, blaming the continuous increase of real estate taxes and of minimum wages. [13] [14]

Iron Chef America is an American cooking show based on Fuji Television's Iron Chef, and is the second American adaptation of the series, following the failed Iron Chef USA that aired in 2001. The show is produced by Food Network, which also carried a dubbed version of the original Iron Chef. Like the original Japanese program, the program is a culinary game show. In each episode, a new challenger chef competes against one of the resident "Iron Chefs" in a one-hour cooking competition based on a secret ingredient or ingredients, and sometimes theme.

Anne W. Burrell is an American chef, television personality, and former instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education. She is the host of the Food Network show Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and co-host of Worst Cooks in America. She was also one of the Iron Chefs, Mario Batali's sous chefs in the Iron Chef America series and appears on other programs on the network such as The Best Thing I Ever Ate. She was a contestant on the fourth season of The Food Network competition show, The Next Iron Chef Super Chefs being eliminated in episode 6. She was also a contestant on the first season of Chopped All-Stars Tournament, winning the "Food Network Personalities" preliminary round to advance to the final round, where she placed second runner up to Nate Appleman (winner) and Aarón Sanchez. In 2015, Burrell won the fourth installment of the Chopped All-Stars tournament winning $75,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She also hosted the series Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell in 2012–2013.

Gand was the host of the Food Network show Sweet Dreams. She was the Chef-in-Residence at Elawa Farm, in Lake Forest, Illinois. Gand is a partner and was the founding Executive Pastry Chef at Tru, a contemporary fine-dining restaurant affiliated with Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises. Gand and her partners at Tru won the 2007 James Beard Foundation Award for Service. She has blogged for the Huffington Post, was a contestant on Iron Chef America in the 2006–2007 season, and was a judge on Bravo's Top Chef in 2008 for the episode Wedding Wars. Gand was also featured on the Great Chefs television program.

SHARE is a "highly regarded New York City peer support" organization of women affected by breast or ovarian cancer. SHARE is a professionally managed volunteer organization. Trained volunteers and staff who are breast or ovarian cancer survivors operate telephone hotlines in English, Spanish and ten other languages, lead support groups, and offer an array of educational services in 18 sites and in every borough of New York City. SHARE does not charge for any of its services, and has been praised for "their extensive outreach programs to underserved communities in New York City." The organization cooperates with several major hospitals in the New York City area.

The Spotted Pig was a gastropub located at 314 West 11th Street in the West Village in Manhattan in New York City. The 100-seat gastropub was owned by Ken Friedman. Mario Batali was a primary investor. The chef was April Bloomfield, a British expatriate celebrity chef who was hired after flying to New York and interviewing with Mario Batali and Friedman. The restaurant held a single Michelin Star from about 2006 to 2016. The restaurant closed on January 26, 2020.

April Bloomfield is a British chef who has opened two New York restaurants: The Spotted Pig and The Breslin Bar & Dining Room. Bloomfield had previously worked at several restaurants in the United Kingdom, including The River Café and Bibendum.

Roberto Treviño is an American chef known for his appearances on Iron Chef: America and The Next Iron Chef. He is chef and owner of three restaurants and a bar in the Condado area of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
