Ann MacLean ONS is a Canadian politician, mental health therapist, and social worker. She was elected to Councillor of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia in 1985 and mayor in 1991. She was the first female Mayor in New Glasgow's history.

Early life and education

MacLean earned her Bachelor of Arts and master's degree in Social Work from Dalhousie University. [1]

Career

In 1976, MacLean founded the Metropolitan Mental Health Group Homes Association and later the Tearmann Society for Abused Women in 1984. [2] The following year, MacLean was elected to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia's Town Council, before running for mayor. In 1991, she became the first female in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia's history to be elected mayor. [3]

From 2004 until 2005, while serving as mayor, MacLean was appointed president of the national Board of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. During her term as president, she worked with mayor Anna Allen to encourage more woman to join political offices. [4] She also began to develop women's shelters, which was a taboo topic at the time. [5] After being re-elected mayor in 2004, MacLean decided to leave politics in 2008. [3] Upon her retirement, she became the longest-serving mayor in New Glasgow's history of New Glasgow. [6] The next year, the Federation of Canadian of Municipalities created The Ann MacLean Award for Outstanding Service by a Woman in Municipal Politics to honour her achievements. [7]

In 2013, MacLean chaired the Pictou County United Way's Leaders of the Way Campaign and was later named to the Halifax International Airport Authority board of directors. [7] In 2019, MacLean was the recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia. [8]

Stellarton is a town located in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is adjacent and to the south of the larger town of New Glasgow. In pioneer times the area was called Coal Mines Station, and from 1833 until 1870, it was known as Albion Mines. The town was incorporated as Stellarton in 1889 and owes its name to a specific type of torbanite which came to be known as "stellarite" because of the "stars of fire" given off by its sparky flame.

It was founded as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932, and became the New Democratic Party in 1961. It became the governing party of Nova Scotia following the 2009 Nova Scotia election, winning 31 seats in the Legislature, under the leadership of Premier Darrell Dexter. It is the first New Democratic Party in Atlantic Canada to form a government. The party lost government at the 2013 election, losing 24 seats, including Dexter's seat. The Progressive Conservative Association of Nova Scotia, is a moderate political party in Nova Scotia, Canada. Like most conservative parties in Atlantic Canada, it has been historically associated with the Red Tory faction of Canadian conservatism. The party is currently led by Pictou East MLA Tim Houston. The party won a majority government in the 2021 provincial election.

Flora MacDonald (politician) Canadian politician (1926–2015)

Flora Isabel MacDonald, was a Canadian politician and humanitarian. Canada's first female foreign minister, she was also one of the first women to vie for leadership of a major Canadian political party, the Progressive Conservatives. She became a close ally of Prime Minister Joe Clark, serving in his cabinet from 1979 to 1980, as well as in the cabinet of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney from 1984 to 1988. In her later life, she was known for her humanitarian work abroad. The City of Ottawa recognised MacDonald on July 11, 2018 by naming a new bicycle and footbridge over the Rideau Canal the Passerelle Flora Footbridge.

Karla Michelle MacFarlane is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in the 2013 provincial election. Stella Bowles Canadian environmentalist

Stella Marguerite Bowles, MSM, ONS is a Canadian environmentalist, author, and the youngest recipient of the Order of Nova Scotia. Canada also recognized Stella with a Meritorious Service Medal. As an advocate for youth activism, Stella co-wrote a book for children titled My River: Cleaning up the LaHave River with Anne Laurel Carter, Stella gave a TEDx talk about her project on the LaHave River titled Oh poop! It's worse than I thought.
