Anna Segal (born 15 August 1986) is an Australian Olympic freestyle slopestyle skier and two-time world champion.

Segal won the gold medal for the inaugural Women's Ski Slopestyle at Winter X Games 13 at Buttermilk Mountain on 24 January 2009 in Aspen, Colorado. She also won the gold medal in slopestyle at the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships. She won the gold medal as well in the Slopestyle at the 2012 AFP World Championships in Whistler, Canada.

Early life

Segal was born in Melbourne, Australia. Her parents are Susan Davis and Alan Segal. She was educated at St Catherine's School, Toorak, matriculating in 2004. [2] She has a degree in Arts & Commerce from Monash University (2015). [3] Her sister Nat Segal is a professional skier. [4]

Skiing career

Segal's home mountain is Whistler Blackcomb in Canada.[ citation needed ]

Segal initially began competitive skiing as a mogul skier, and subsequently moved into freeskiing events. She was a member of the NSWIS/SSA National Development mogul team 2003–05 and competed in several Europa Cup Mogul events during that time. She suffered a serious knee injury in 2006.[ citation needed ]

Her first major win in slopestyle was the Women's US Freeskiing Open at Copper Mountain, USA, in 2007.[ citation needed ]

She won the gold medal for the inaugural Women's Ski Slopestyle at Winter X Games 13 at Buttermilk Mountain on 24 January 2009 in Aspen, Colorado. [5] She also won the gold medal in slopestyle at the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships. [6] Segal was named the 2011 Australian Snowsports Person of the Year by Skiing and Snowboarding Australia [7]

Segal broke her thumb and damaged her knee in January 2012. She won the gold medal in the Slopestyle at the 2012 AFP World Championships in Whistler, Canada. [8]

In early 2013, Segal damaged her left knee at a World Cup event in Switzerland. [4] She took 3rd in Slopestyle at the FIS USA World Cup in 2013. [9]

Segal competed for Australia at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, four weeks after learning she had torn the ACL in her knee. [10] She came in fourth place, eight points behind bronze medalist Canadian Kim Lamarre in the women's ski slopestyle. It was Australia's first fourth-place finish ever in Winter Olympics history. Segal retired from competitive skiing after the Olympics. [10] During her career she sustained three ACL reconstructions, two meniscal tears, cartilage damage in her knee, a broken ankle, a broken thumb, and a few concussions. [12]

Anna is now based in Whistler, Canada, with a focus on backcountry skiing and progressing women’s extreme skiing through ski films.

Anna co-produced her first feature film, Finding The Line (2018) alongside her sister, Nat Segal. The film has been screened at film festivals and events across the world and was recently purchased by Red Bull Media House.

She successfully lobbied the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to have the event added to the Olympic program for the 2014 Winter Olympics. She was considered a medal favourite in the event. Burke died following a training accident in Utah in 2012.

Grete Eliassen is an American-Norwegian freestyle skier. She won a bronze medal in Slopestyle at the 2011 Winter X Games XV in Aspen, Colorado, behind Kaya Turski and Keri Herman. She has won 6 medals at the Winter X Games in slopestyle and halfpipe events including back to back gold medals in 2005 and 2006. Eliassen serves as the 16th president of the Women's Sports Foundation, effective January 2017.

Kaya Turski is a Canadian freestyle skier. She is an eight-time Winter X Games champion in Women's Ski slope style. At the 2010 Winter X Games XIV held in Aspen, she won her gold medal with the highest ever slopestyle score at a Winter X Games with 96.66. One week after she won the gold medal in Slopestyle at the 2011 Winter X Games XV in Aspen, Colorado, ahead of Keri Herman and Grete Eliassen, she captured the silver medal at the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, behind Anna Segal of Australia. In mid-2013, she tore her anterior cruciate ligament.

Keri Marie Herman is an American freestyle skier and US Olympian. She placed 10th in Slopestyle at the 2014 Sochi Games. She won a silver medal in Slopestyle at the 2011 Winter X Games XV in Aspen, Colorado, behind Kaya Turski. The following week, Herman took bronze at the 2011 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships. Herman now holds a total of 5 Winter X Games medals. 3 in Aspen and 2 from European X Games in Tignes, France. Keri Herman grew up in Bloomington, MN. She played ice hockey during her four years at Visitation High School as Center for the Visitation Blazers team. She moved to CO to attend the University of Denver where she graduated in 2005 with a BSBA in Finance and Marketing. She studied abroad for a semester at the University of Queensland, Australia. She moved to Breckenridge in 2004 where she has since lived, traveling around the world competing in Slopestyle and Halfpipe skiing events. Ski ballet is a form of ballet performed on skis. It is very similar to figure skating, combining spins, jumps, and flips in a two-minute routine choreographed to music. It was part of the professional freestyle skiing tours of the 1970s and 1980s and then an official FIS and Olympic discipline until the year 2000. Ski ballet became known as Acroski in the 1990s in an effort to legitimize its place among the competitive ski community, especially to the FIS. It is no longer a part of competitive freestyle skiing.
