Annabel Jones (born January 1972) [1] is a Welsh television producer, best known for producing Black Mirror with Charlie Brooker. [2] She is a co-writer of the 2018 book Inside Black Mirror, with Brooker and Jason Arnopp. [3] Jones is co-founder of the production company Broke and Bones, alongside Brooker. [4]

Early life

Jones was born in January 1972 and grew up in Milford Haven, Wales. [1] [5] She began studying developmental economics at the London School of Economics in 1990. After graduating in 1994, she worked for television production companies in Soho, London. [5]

Career

Jones became an executive at the production company Endemol. [5] She began working with Charlie Brooker at the production company Zeppotron, owned by the Endemol, on five series of Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe (2006–2008), the first two series of the science fiction anthology series Black Mirror (2011 and 2013) and the satirical police procedural A Touch of Cloth (2012–2014). [5] [6] Jones and Brooker founded the Endemol Shine production company House of Tomorrow in 2014, Jones serving as managing director. It had a revenue of £31.2 million in 2018. [6] Jones and Brooker quit the label House of Tomorrow in January 2020, founding the production company Broke and Bones in February 2020. The pair each have a 50% share in the company. [4] [6]

Awards and nominations

In 2017, Jones won a Primetime Emmy Award for the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero" and in 2018, won another for the episode "USS Callister". [7] Alongside other individuals associated with the series, Jones was credited in the programme's nomination for the 2018 Black Reel Award for Outstanding Television Movie or Limited Series [8] and the 2017 nomination and 2018 awarding of the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Long-Form Television. Death to 2020 is a 2020 mockumentary by Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones under their Broke and Bones production company as a Netflix original production. The special features a series of fictional characters discussing US and UK events of 2020 including the COVID-19 pandemic and US presidential election. It was released on Netflix on 27 December 2020. The mockumentary received mostly negative critical reception, with reviewers criticising the jokes as obvious, though some of the cast performances were praised. A sequel special, Death to 2021, was released on December 27, 2021.

Cat Burglar is a 2022 animated interactive film created by Charlie Brooker and co-written by supervising director Mike Hollingsworth and director James Bowman, with Annabel Jones as an executive producer. Debuting on Netflix on 22 February 2022, the viewer plays as a cartoon cat burglar named Rowdy who is trying to steal a valuable artwork from a museum which is being protected by a security guard dog named Peanut. The viewer must answer a series of trivia questions correctly in order to advance the story, and avoid Rowdy losing his three remaining lives. The film pays homage to the works of animator Tex Avery.

It is released on a fictional streaming service, Streamberry, that parodies Netflix; Brooker said the company had no objections to their portrayal. Marketing for the sixth series featured Streamberry and personalised Is Awful thumbnails.
