The Anne Fontaine Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, created in 2011 by the Franco-Brazilian fashion designer Anne Fontaine. Based in New York City, it aims to encourage reforestation and concentrates its financial resources specifically on the protection of the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil". [1]

A 501(c) organization is a nonprofit organization in the federal law of the United States according to Section 501(c) and is one of over 29 types of nonprofit organizations exempt from some federal income taxes. Sections 503 through 505 set out the requirements for attaining such exemptions. Many states refer to Section 501(c) for definitions of organizations exempt from state taxation as well. 501(c) organizations can receive unlimited contributions from individuals, corporations, and unions.

They can operate in religious, scientific, research, or educational settings.

Founder

Anne Fontaine was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro. She moved to France when she was 18, where she designed her first collection of white shirts for women in 1993. She founded her brand Anne Fontaine, with her husband Ari Zlotkin, and opened her first store in Paris in 1994. The company now operates 70 stores worldwide (25 of which are in the United States). [2] Her personal experience of living with the Canela tribe in the Amazon rainforest [3] inspired her commitment to the conservation of the environment conservation of the environment. In 2011, Anne Fontaine created her own foundation in New York, in favor of the protection of rainforests.

Environmental protection is the practice of protecting the natural environment by individuals, organisations and governments. Its objectives are to conserve natural resources and the existing natural environment and, where possible, to repair damage and reverse trends.

Mission

The Anne Fontaine Foundation is dedicated to raise environmental awareness and to encourage reforestation activities, mostly located in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica). To do so, the Anne Fontaine Foundation supports reforestation programs implemented in Brazil by local NGOs, and to which local communities are associated. [4]

Atlantic Forest biome in Brazil

The Atlantic Forest is a South American forest that extends along the Atlantic coast of Brazil from Rio Grande do Norte state in the north to Rio Grande do Sul state in the south, and inland as far as Paraguay and the Misiones Province of Argentina, where the region is known as Selva Misionera.

In order to raise funds and environmental awareness, the Anne Fontaine Foundation organizes artistic events and invites artists inspired by nature themes to collaborate. The foundation is promoting also environmental awareness through workshops and artistic contests organized in local communities and schools. In 2013, 2014 and 2016, the Anne Fontaine Foundation held three photographs exhibitions at Sotheby’s, entitled Trees in Focus. Two at Sotheby's New York (2013 and 2016) and one at Sotheby's Paris. One of the world's largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewelry, real estate, and collectibles, Sotheby's operation is divided into three segments: auction, finance, and dealer. The company's services range from corporate art services to private sales. It is named after one of its cofounders, John Sotheby.


Projects and partnerships

The Foundation has established long-term partnerships with 3 local NGOs in Brazil that are committed to implement reforestation programs. The Instituto Floresta Viva, the Instituto Terra and the APNE are based in Bahia, Minas Gerais and the state of Pernambuco, in regions highly threatened by deforestation. The Foundation has supported the plantation of 40,000 seedlings so far. [6]

Educative initiatives

The Anne Fontaine Foundation aims at educating children about the importance of the rainforest and the ways to protect it. Each year the foundation organizes art contests "Naturart", in Brazilian schools from kindergarten to 8th grade. In the poorest communities of Rio de Janeiro, the Anne Fontaine Foundation partners with the Planeta Ginga Festival and the Rio Botanical Garden in order to organize a workshop "Mata Atlantica". During 2 days, children have the opportunity to learn more about the Mata Atlantica, and to plant seedlings on the slopes of the favela.


Artistic initiatives and fundraising

Trees in Focus

Since 2013, the Anne Fontaine Foundation has been organizing a charity auction of tree photographs, Trees in Focus, to the benefit of the Foundation. The 2016 edition featured photographers like Sebastião Salgado, Michael Kenna, Sarah Moon, Antoine Verglas, Claudia Jaguaribe, Pamela Hanson, André Rau and many others, that have been supporting the foundation since the first edition. Among the photographers who joined the 2016 edition, there is Andrew Moore, Beth Moon from the US, Vincent Rosenblatt, Julia Kater, Valdir Cruz, Oskar Metsavaht, from Brazil or Christophe d’Yvoire from France. Michael Kenna Former American politician

Michael Kenna, also known as "Hinky Dink", was an American politician who served as alderman of Chicago's 1st ward from 1897 to 1923 and again from 1939 to 1943. In addition to his position as alderman he was Democratic party committeeman of the 1st ward from 1893 to 1944. Representing the Chicago Loop and later its environs in such capacities, he led what was often called the "world's richest ward". He and his partner, fellow 1st ward alderman "Bathhouse John" Coughlin, controlled the ward for most of the first half of the 20th century.

Sarah Moon HonFRPS, previously known as Marielle Warin, is a French photographer. Initially a model, she turned to fashion photography in the 1970s. Since 1985, she has concentrated on gallery and film work.

The Forest Day

Every year, Anne Fontaine dedicates one day to the protection of the forests. That day, 50% of the sales in the Anne Fontaine stores worldwide are donated to the Anne Fontaine Foundation. [8] [9] [10]
