SS <i>Leonardo da Vinci</i> (1958)

SS Leonardo da Vinci was an ocean liner built in 1960 by Ansaldo Shipyards, Italy for the Italian Line as a replacement for their SS Andrea Doria that had been lost in 1956. She was initially used in transatlantic service alongside SS Cristoforo Colombo, and primarily for cruising after the delivery of the new SS Michelangelo and SS Raffaello in 1965. In 1976 the Leonardo da Vinci became the last Italian Line passenger liner to be used in service across the North Atlantic. Between 1977 and 1978 she was used as a cruise ship by Italia Crociere, but was laid up from 1978 onwards until 1982 when she was scrapped.

Simone or Simon Doria was a Genoese merchant, politician, and admiral, a member of the powerful Doria family. He was the son of Ansaldo Doria and Anna Grimaldi. He was elected consul six times between 1175 and 1188. Having been elected admiral in 1189, he led a naval fleet in support of the troops of Philip Augustus at the Siege of Acre in 1190. In 1219 he led the Genoese fleet in the Siege of Damietta. He left three known sons: Andrea, who married into the ruling family of Logudoro; Pietro, who fought with his father at Damietta; and Niccolò.

The House of Doria Pamphilj Landi was a princely Roman family of Genoese extraction. Legend has it that the origins of the Doria family date from the early 11th century, but the authentic pedigree is traced to Ansaldo d'Oria, consul of Genoa in the 12th century. The descent of the several Doria family lines in Genoa is well-known and is described in Natale Battilana's 19th-century genealogical study of old Genoese families.

On 13 luglio del 2006 it was added to the list of 42 palaces which now form the UNESCO World Heritage Site Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli. It is currently owned by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and houses the National Gallery of Art in Palazzo Spinola.

Giovanni Carlo Doria Genoan art collector and patron

Giovanni Carlo Doria (1576-1625) was a Genoese art collector and mecenas of the early 17th century. A son of Agostino Doria, doge of Genoa in 1601-1603, he was a prominent member of one of the richest and most influential families of the Republic of Genoa; his brother Giovanni Stefano Doria (1578-1641) became the 101st doge of Genoa (1633-1635) and was considered the richest man in Italy in his day. Giovanni Carlo was married to Veronica Spinola, daughter of Ambrogio Spinola. He was given the Order of Santiago by Philip III of Spain.
