A write-in candidate is a candidate whose name does not appear on the ballot but seeks election by asking voters to cast a vote for the candidate by physically writing in the person's name on the ballot. Depending on electoral law it may be possible to win an election by winning a sufficient number of such write-in votes,which count equally as if the person was formally listed on the ballot.

A member of the Republican Party,Miller previously served as the U.S. representative for Michigan's 10th congressional district from 2003 to 2017,the Michigan Secretary of State from 1995 to 2003,and the Macomb County Treasurer from 1993 to 1995. She also served as the Harrison Township Supervisor.

In mid 2014,the DWSD had acquired significant debt and delinquent accounts,and talks of privatization were occurring. As of January 1,2016,under the terms of the City of Detroit's municipal bankruptcy the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) was created with a $50 million annual lease agreement to the City of Detroit for 40 years,while the DWSD bifurcated to focus its services specifically on the water and sewer customers within only the city of Detroit.
Joseph J. Lhota is an American public servant and a former politician who served as the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and was also a former deputy mayor of New York City. He was the Republican nominee in an unsuccessful bid for the 2013 election for Mayor of New York City. In January 2014,he became senior vice president,vice dean,and chief of staff at NYU Langone Medical Center. In 2017,he returned to the chairmanship of the MTA,but would not run the authority day-to-day. He resigned from that position in 2018.

The Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) is a regional water authority in the U.S. state of Michigan. It provides drinking water treatment,drinking water distribution,wastewater collection,and wastewater treatment services for the Southeast Michigan communities,including Wayne,Oakland,and Macomb counties,among others. GLWA overlays a majority of the water and sewer assets which were formerly operated and maintained by the Detroit Water Sewer District (DWSD) prior to the bankruptcy of the City of Detroit,Michigan.
The Detroit Health Department has provided public health services,and has partnered with neighborhoods and community stakeholders,for over 100 years. The department was able to grow from its focus on communicable diseases to one that had over 40 programs and services at one point. When budgets began to deteriorate,many of those programs and services ended. With the city on the verge of bankruptcy,most of the department's remaining services were contracted out to a private agency,the Institute for Population Health (IPH). However,upon successful progress post-bankruptcy the City of Detroit was able to take control of many of the services that were transitioned to IPH in 2014 and 2015. In 2015,Mayor Mike Duggan hired Dr Abdul El-Sayed to run the department,and he stayed in that role for a little over a year before leaving to run for Governor of Michigan. In February 2017,Dr. Joneigh Khaldun,a practicing emergency physician and former Chief Medical Officer of the Baltimore City Health Department,was appointed to lead the department.

He was a candidate in Michigan's 2018 Democratic gubernatorial primary election,placing second out of three candidates. In September 2018,he founded Southpaw Michigan,a political action committee,to help elect other progressive candidates in Michigan.
