Anthony Caporale is an American playwright, theatre producer, beverage expert, and educator. He is known for his work in mixology education and his role in creating and producing the Off-Broadway series The Imbible. [1]
Caporale graduated with a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science in 1990 from Duke University. [2]
Caporale began his career in 1990 as a bartender, before entering the engineering field in 1991. In 2006, he launched Art of the Drink, the first online video series focused exclusively on cocktails, spirits, and mixology. [3] The series has been featured on major web video platforms, including TivoCast OnDemand and Cablevision Public Access. It was named Best Instructional Podcast by "The New York Times Online" and has been translated into Spanish and Chinese.
He also created and hosted "Broadway Bartender", a web series distributed by BroadwayWorld that won the Taste Award for Best Drink or Beverage Program Online. [4] [5] [6] Additionally, he wrote and hosted the Spoon University video series “Mixology 101”. [7] [8]
He is a faculty member of the Culinary Management Program at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in New York City. [1] He serves as Director of Spirits Education and Beverage Research [9] and authored the cocktail chapter of the cookbook Cognitive Cooking with Chef Watson: Recipes for Innovation from IBM & the Institute of Culinary Education. He has also served as the U.S. Brand Ambassador for Drambuie Scotch Liqueur, the National Cocktail Ambassador for Truvia Natural Sweetener, [11] and the Managing Editor for Chilled Magazine. [12]
Caporale wrote and produced The Imbible: A Spirited History of Drinking, a stage play exploring the history of alcohol through musical comedy, for the 2014 New York International Fringe Festival. The production received accolades from The New York Times and opened Off-Broadway at SoHo Playhouse following the festival. The show ran for three years with Caporale in the lead role, before moving to New World Stages where it ran for another three years with a new cast. It ultimately played over 1,000 performances, becoming one of the longest-running Off-Broadway productions and spawning three sequels. [13] [11] [14]

A cocktail is a mixed drink, usually alcoholic. Most commonly, a cocktail is a combination of one or more spirits mixed with other ingredients, such as juices, flavored syrups, tonic water, shrubs, and bitters. Cocktails vary widely across regions of the world, and many websites publish both original recipes and their own interpretations of older and more famous cocktails.
A Manhattan is a cocktail made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. While rye is the traditional whiskey of choice, other commonly used whiskies include Canadian whisky, bourbon, blended whiskey, and Tennessee whiskey. A flaming drink is a cocktail or other mixed drink that contains flammable, high-proof alcohol, which is ignited before consumption. The alcohol may be an integral part of the drink, or it may be floated as a thin layer across the top of the drink. The flames are mostly for dramatic flair. A Bloody Mary is a cocktail containing vodka, tomato juice, and other spices and flavorings including Worcestershire sauce, hot sauces, garlic, herbs, horseradish, celery, olives, pickled vegetables, salt, black pepper, lemon juice, lime juice and celery salt. The Last Word is a gin-based cocktail originating at the Detroit Athletic Club in the 1910s, shortly before the start of Prohibition. The Imbible: A Spirited History of Drinking is an educational entertainment musical with book and new lyrics by Anthony Caporale, and original musical arrangements by Josh Ehrlich and Anthony Caporale. Best known for creating the Video Podcast Art of the Drink, Caporale selected the music and created new arrangements with Ehrlich, an arranger for Voices of Gotham. The Imbible tells the story of how Western Civilization has been influenced by the introduction of alcohol consumption. Caporale is supported in the lead role by a trio of waiters who also serve as clowns, Greek chorus, and round out the parts of a barbershop quartet called The Backwaiters.
