Belize is a country located on the eastern coast of Central America. Belize is bordered on the northwest by Mexico, on the east by the Caribbean Sea, and on the south and west by Guatemala. It has an area of 22,970 square kilometres (8,867 sq mi) and a population of 387,879 (2017). Its mainland is about 180 mi (290 km) long and 68 mi (110 km) wide. It has the lowest population and population density in Central America. The country's population growth rate of 1.87% per year (2015) is the second highest in the region and one of the highest in the Western Hemisphere.

Peoples United Party Belizean political party

The People's United Party (PUP) is one of two major political parties in Belize. It is currently the main opposition party with 12 of 31 seats in the House of Representatives. It is a centre-left Christian democratic party. The party leader is Johnny Briceño, who currently serves as Belize's Leader of the Opposition.

He was elected Mayor of Belmopan in 2000, re-elected in 2003, and opted not to run for a third term, leaving office in 2006; while in office, he handed the keys of the city to Chen Shui-bian, President of the Republic of China. Simeon López succeeded him as mayor.

Belmopan is the capital city of Belize. Its population in 2010 was 16,451. Although the smallest capital city in the continental Americas by population, Belmopan is the third-largest settlement in Belize, behind Belize City and San Ignacio. Founded as a planned community in 1970, Belmopan is one of the newest national capital cities in the world. Since 2000 Belmopan has been one of two settlements in Belize to hold official city status, along with Belize City.

Chen Shui-bian is a retired Taiwanese politician and lawyer who served as President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2000 to 2008. Chen is the first president from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) which ended the Kuomintang's (KMT) 55 years of continuous rule in Taiwan. He is colloquially referred to as A-Bian.

Simeon López is a former mayor of Belmopan, the capital of Belize. He is a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP); in 2006, he was elected as mayor, and also became vice president of the Belize Mayors' Association. Marconi Sosa, Benque Viejo del Carmen's mayor, succeeded him as that organization's vice president in 2007.

Chanona was appointed to the Senate in April 2006, holding the position until his resignation on September 13, 2007, over the issue of the passage of the Public Utilities Act (which he had opposed on the grounds that it diminished the autonomy of the Public Utilities Commission). David Hoy was appointed to fill Chanona's seat in November of that year.

Chanona was also formerly chairman of the Belize Citrus Growers Association (CGA). He and several members of his family were among the hundreds of victims of the May 2, 1998 Hummingbird Highway robbery.
