Anthony C. Marrone is an American fire chief serving as the tenth chief of the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) since April 2023. He previously served as the acting fire chief and he oversaw multiple operational and administrative bureaus.
As of 2022,Marrone has served in the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) for over 37 years. [1] He assumed the role of acting fire chief on August 1,2022,following the retirement of fire chief Daryl L. Osby. [1] His appointment was made by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors,and it followed a prior interim role during Osby's leave of absence in 2021. [1]
Marrone's career within the LACoFD includes experience in emergency operations,business operations,and overseeing multiple bureaus. He has led the Leadership and Professional Standards Bureau,Special Services Bureau,Emergency Medical Services Bureau,East Regional Operations Bureau,and Central Regional Operations Bureau. [2] He has also managed wildland fires and other all-risk incidents as part of his operational responsibilities. [1]
On February 28,2023,the board of supervisors voted unanimously to select Marrone as the department's permanent chief,despite opposition from several organizations. These groups raised concerns about diversity,transparency,and inclusivity in the department's leadership selection process. [2] Marrone was officially sworn in as fire chief on April 24,2023,becoming the department's tenth chief. [2] As chief,he receives an annual salary of US$441,792. [2] Upon assuming the position,he committed to advancing diversity and equity within the department and stabilizing its budget to enhance service levels. [2]
During his tenure,Marrone has overseen the department’s response to major wildfires,including the January 2025 Southern California wildfires. [3] These events taxed the resources of the department and highlighted challenges in manpower and resource allocation. Marrone acknowledged the limitations faced by LACoFD and collaborated with other agencies to address the crises. [3]

The 1978 Agoura-Malibu firestorm was a firestorm fueled by at least eight significant wildfires in the Los Angeles area on October 23,1978. At around noon that day,an arsonist started a fire that eventually burned 25,000 acres (10,000 ha) from Cornell to Broad Beach in Malibu. The first fire alarm in Agoura was reported at 12:11 pm,and by 2:30 pm,the fire had reached the Pacific Ocean 13 miles (21 km) south in Malibu. It had been declared a Level 2 fire at 1:57 pm.

The Creek Fire was a large wildfire that burned in Kagel Canyon and the Angeles National Forest north of Sylmar,a neighborhood in Los Angeles,California,United States,and one of multiple wildfires that broke out across Southern California in December 2017. The Creek Fire burned 15,619 acres (63 km2) and destroyed 123 structures,including 60 homes,before being contained on January 9,2018,following heavy rainfall from a winter storm. The fire threatened the communities of Santa Clarita,Glendale,Olive View,Lake View Terrace,Sunland-Tujunga,Shadow Hills,Sylmar,Pacoima,Lopez Canyon,and Kagel Canyon,as well as the Olive View–UCLA Medical Center. During the wildfire,115,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes.
The Woolsey Fire was a wildfire that started in Los Angeles County and spread north to neighboring Ventura County,both located in the U.S. state of California. The fire ignited on November 8,2018 and was not fully contained until November 21,2018. The fire burned 96,949 acres of land,destroyed 1,643 structures,killed three people,and prompted the evacuation of more than 295,000 people. It was one of several fires in California that ignited on the same day,along with the nearby Hill Fire and the destructive Camp Fire in Northern California.
The Bridge Fire was a destructive wildfire in the Angeles National Forest in Southern California's Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. The fire began on September 8 and burned a total of 56,030 acres before being fully contained on November 26,2024. The cause of the fire is under investigation. It was the third-largest wildfire of California's 2024 fire season. The fire threatened the areas of Wrightwood,Mount Baldy Village and Jackson Lake,where mandatory evacuation orders were in place. The fire affected nearly 100 structures total.
The Palisades Fire was a highly-destructive wildfire that began burning in the Santa Monica Mountains of Los Angeles County on January 7,2025,which grew to destroy large areas of Pacific Palisades,Topanga,and Malibu. One of a series of wildfires in Southern California driven by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds,it burned 23,448 acres,killed 12 people,and destroyed 6,837 structures,making it the tenth-deadliest and third-most destructive California wildfire on record. The fire was fully contained on January 31 after burning for 24 days.

The Eaton Fire was a highly-destructive wildfire in Los Angeles County,Southern California. The fire began on the evening of January 7,2025,in the Eaton Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains,and was driven by powerful Santa Ana winds into foothill communities,particularly Altadena. The fire killed at least 17 people and destroyed more than 9,000 buildings,becoming the fifth deadliest and the second most destructive wildfire in the history of the state of California. The cause of the fire is under investigation;news reports and lawsuits have focused on the possible involvement of power lines operated by electrical utility Southern California Edison. The fire was fully contained on January 31st after burning for 24 days.
Kristin Crowley is the chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). She has served in the position since 2022.
