Anton Wachter is the protagonist of eight novels by Dutch author Simon Vestdijk.
The life of Wachter is captured in eight semi-autobiographical novels considered central to Vestdijk's oeuvre. The first four volumes are set in the town of Lahringen, meaning Harlingen, where Vestdijk was born and raised. The last four volumes are set in Amsterdam and describe the life of Wachter/Vestdijk as a medical student.
The first three novels originate from Vestdijk's ambitious debut novel, Kind tussen vier vrouwen ("Child between four women"). Written in 1933, it was rejected by the publisher, but published posthumously in 1972.
The first novel in the cycle's chronology, Sint Sebastiaan, derived its name from a painting of the saint by Alonso Cano Vestdijk admired in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. From an early age Vestdijk spent vacations in Amsterdam, and returned there frequently, during his studies in Utrecht and after he moved to Doorn, also to enjoy "the pool of sinful and forbidden things". A statue of Anton Wachter by Suze Boschma-Berkhout, in Harlingen's Voorstraat, was unveiled in 1973.

Ferdinand Bordewijk was a Dutch author. His style, which is terse and symbolic, is considered to belong to New Objectivity and magic realism. He was awarded the P. C. Hooft Award in 1953 and the Constantijn Huygens Prize in 1957. He wrote novels and short stories; of his novels, his 1938 Character is canonical in the Netherlands, and was the basis for a 1997 film of the same name.

Hella Haasse, in a lengthy analysis in her Lezen achter de letters, calls it a "novel of conscience", and one of his most cynical ones. Agnes Andeweg notes Gothic elements in the novel.

Het verboden rijk is a novel by Dutch author J. Slauerhoff (1898–1936). First published in 1931, the novel follows two narratives simultaneously—that of the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões, and that of a 20th-century Irishman, a radio operator and sailor. A sequel, Het leven op aarde, was published in 1933; a third book was planned but never finished.
Terug tot Ina Damman is a novel by Dutch author Simon Vestdijk. First published in 1934, it is one of Vestdijk's most popular novels. It is the third installment in the Anton Wachter cycle, a series of eight novels whose protagonist is Anton Wachter, the author's alter ego. His entire existence as an artist, Vestdijk later wrote Theun de Vries, originates in his "Ina Damman experience".
