Antonio Marziale (born September 28, 1993) is an American actor, best known for playing Elliot in the original Netflix movie Alex Strangelove . He also portrays the character of Benicio in Brian Jordan Alvarez's popular YouTube series, The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.
Marziale was born in London, England. His father is Italian and his mother is from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He attended The American School in Switzerland and attended Carnegie Mellon University when he was 16 years old. [1]
In addition to his role in Alex Strangelove , in 2017 he starred as Daryn Boston in the 12th season episode "The Memory Remains" of the fantasy horror series Supernatural .
He plays Isaac Bancroft in Netflix's popular dystopic series Altered Carbon . [2]
In 2022, Marziale made his debut as a director and screenwriter in his award-winning short film Starfuckers, which premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, immediately positioning him as a striking new voice in contemporary queer cinema. [3] The film’s European premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival [4] marked a historic milestone, as Marziale became the youngest director ever nominated for the Berlinale's Teddy Award. [5] . Starfuckers went on to screen at the Telluride Film Festival [6] , where it was hand-selected by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins for the festival's prestigious Shorts Program. [7] .
The film garnered international honors, including Best Film at the Champs-Élysées Film Festival [8] , further cementing its reputation on the global festival circuit. It was subsequently acquired by MUBI [9] and ARTE [10] , with additional rights secured by Searchlight Pictures, an unusual trajectory for a short film and a testament to its critical impact. . In 2023, following the film's success, Marziale was invited to serve as a jury member at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, after participating at the festival the previous year. [12]
