It is divided into eight districts and has a population of approximately 500,000. The capital of the province is Maidan Shar, while the most populous district in the province is Saydabad District. Abdul Jabbar Naeemi is an Afghan diplomat and politician. He served as the governor of Laghman Province in Afghanistan, and before that was governor Khost province and Maidan Wardak province of Afghanistan. At one time he served as a representative from Kandahar Province to the Loya Jirga. In 2004 he was Hamid Karzai's election agent in Pakistan, where he campaigned for Karzai and worked on educating local Afghans about the democratic process.
Parliamentary elections were held in Afghanistan alongside provincial elections on 18 September 2005. Former warlords and their followers gained the majority of seats in both the lower house and the provincial council. Women won 28% of the seats in the lower house, six more than the 25% guaranteed in the 2004 constitution.

He is the first deputy speaker of Afghanistan Wolesi Jirga and his current position is the Advisor of President Hamid Karzai for security and tribal affairs He is a member of the Pashtun ethnic group, and the Noorzai tribe. A report on Kandahar prepared at the Navy Postgraduate School stated he is first deputy speaker, and that he is related to President Hamid Karzai through marriage, and that he is a high school graduate.
Mohammad Omar Samim was selected to represent Herat Province in Afghanistan's Meshrano Jirga, the upper house of its National Legislature, in 2005. A report on Herat prepared at the Navy Postgraduate School stated he attended the Wazir Fatah Khan High School, and then, between 1979 and 1985 he earned a medical degree at Kabul University.
Abbas Noyan is an ethnic Hazara politician. He is Afghanistan's ambassador to Sweden, from the Islamic Republic that fell in August 2021 to the Taliban. Previously he served as a Member of Parliament to Wolesi Jirga, the lower house, representing the people of Kabul province from 2005 to 2010. In 2005, he ranked seventh among candidates from Kabul province, quickly rising to one of the most prominent and active representatives at the Wolesi Jirga. During his tenure, he advocated for women's rights, education for all, a responsive and accountable government, and a strong rule of law. Noyan has worked across ethnic and sectarian divides in representing his constituents, and sought to bridge those divides by establishing a multi-ethnic political party.
Sayed Hussain Alami Balkhi, most known as Alami Balkhi, is an Afghan former politician who represented to the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of its national legislature. He was elected to represent Kabul Province in 2005.
