Anwar Lal Dean, born in December 1956, is a Pakistani politician who has served a Member of the Senate of Pakistan from March 2018 to March 2024. [2] He hails from Ladyei village, Sialkot District of Punjab, Pakistan. [3] Dean is a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and was elected to the Senate on a minority seat from Sindh during the 2018 Pakistani Senate election. [4] [5]
Dean's political journey began in Karachi, were he spent much of his life, with the National Students Federation during his college years. In the early 1970s, he joined the PPP in 1985 and build over the years a career within the party, serving as the divisional president of the minority wing and as a special assistant to former Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. [3] [6]
He took oath as Senator on 12 March 2018. [7]
Daen, a christian, has six daughters and a son. Known for his modest lifestyle, he lives in a rented two-bedroom apartment in Karachi's Saddar area and is often seen riding his motorcycle. [3]
Kamran Michael is a Pakistani politician who served as Minister for Statistics, in Abbasi cabinet from August 2017 to May 2018. He previously served as the Minister for Human Rights in the third Sharif ministry from 2013 to 2017. A member of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Michael held the cabinet portfolio of Minister for Ports and Shipping from 2013 to 2016.
General elections were held in Pakistan on 25 July 2018 to elect the members of the 15th National Assembly and the four Provincial Assemblies. The three major parties were Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Khan, the Pakistan Muslim League, led by Shehbaz Sharif, and the Pakistan People's Party, led by Bilawal Bhutto. The PTI won the most seats in the National Assembly but fell short of a majority; the party subsequently formed a coalition government with several smaller parties. At the provincial level, the PTI remained the largest party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP); the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) retained its dominance in Sindh; and the newly formed Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) emerged as the largest party in Balochistan. In Punjab, the result was a hung parliament, with the Pakistan Muslim League (N) winning the most seats. However, after several independent MPAs joined the PTI, the latter became the largest party and was able to form a government.
Ramesh Kumar Vankwani is a Pakistani politician who had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan, from August 2018 till August 2023. But in 2022 he left PTI to join PPP. Previously he was member of the National Assembly from June 2013 to May 2018 and a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh from 2002 to 2007. He was considered a strongest candidate to contest General Elections 2024 from NA-241 Karachi on the ticket of PPP. However, he was not awarded the ticket and his nomination on the reserved seats in National Assembly was not liked by the ideological workers of PPP on the bases that he had been known changing political parties in the past two decades.
The triennial Senate Electionsof Pakistan were held on 3 March 2018 to replace 52 retiring senators - half of the Senate's strength - with the winning candidates serving six-year terms. Overall, Pakistan Muslim League (N) came out as the largest party, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The results of these elections were steeped in controversy due to rampant allegations of horse trading and vote-buying, which lead to the Prime Minister and opposition leader Imran Khan calling for reforms. Prior to this election, PML (N) candidates were declared as independents by the Election Commission of Pakistan owing to a Supreme Court judgment.
