Apeksha (The Hopes) is a 1978 Sri Lankan film directed by H.D. Premaratne [1] and starring Malani Fonseka and Amarasiri Kalansuriya. The film, the director's second feature, [2] was his real breakthrough. [3]

Plot

Niranjala (Malini Fonseka), a member of the English speaking elite, and Nimal (Amarasiri Kalansooriya), a young university graduate, regularly meet at the gas station where he works. They are attracted to each other, and over time, start meeting outside of the station's confines.

One of these occasions occurs at Niranjala's university fair. Nimal comes to meet her, but during the fair, one of Niranjala's friends is attacked by a gang of men. Nimal and his close friend Pradeep (Robin Fernando) help the friend get out of trouble. Later, when Nimal returns to the gas station, this gang of men come after him, and the fighting leads to the gas station owner firing Nimal.

Niranjala heads back to her family's tea estate in the hill country after she finishes university. Her father informs her that she will meet Samson (Ranjan Mendis), the son of an old friend and the new estate manager. Samson was educated in the UK and is returning to Sri Lanka.

Samson exits the airport only to see a poster for a singer named Erine. He watches her perform and when he meets her, it is revealed that they had a relationship in the UK. Samson and Erine spend time together in Colombo and Samson decides to skirt on his promised responsibilities, while Nimal tries to come up with a way to reunite with Niranjala. Meneka (Geetha Kumarasinghe), Niranjala's close friend, and Pradeep scheme for respectable ways for them to get back together. Instead, Nimal finds the letter of invitation in Samson's pocket and uses it to pass for him in the tea country.

Nimal arrives in the tea country and seamlessly convinces Niranjala's father that he is Samson. Nimal learns about tea estate life and as the new estate manager, earns the respect of the estate workers.

Samson's father arrives in Sri Lanka, and realizing that Samson has not moved to the hill country, drags him there, unannounced. Niranjala's father realizes what has happened and kicks Nimal out and forces Niranjala into the arranged marriage between her and Samson. A break-in occurs at the estate, and although no one can find the missing items, the blame falls on Nimal. This ensure his imprisonment until after the wedding.

On the day of the wedding, Nimal escapes and drives off with Niranjala. It comes out to everyone that Samson stole the items, gave some to Erine, and Nimal and Pradeep proceed to beat him up. The movie ends with Niranjala and Nimal running towards each other.

When Niranjala and Meneka leave from the university, a brash young man pulls up and offers Meneka a ride. She refuses and instead of continuing on his way, he insults her. Later, Niranjala and Meneka get into their car, and the young man drives up to them. He is rude and harasses Meneka through the car window.

Nimal has a degree from a Sri Lankan university, yet with the high unemployment rate in the late 1970s, the only job he can attain is that of a gas attendant. When he is unemployed, he fears that other people will assume he is part of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna. Niranjala's social identity as part of the English speaking elite is pointed at this socio-political situation.

Wasana is a 1976 Sinhalese language romance film directed by K.A.W. Perera. The film stars Geetha Kumarasinghe, Vijaya Kumaranatunga and Malini Fonseka made notable roles. Also this film was the cinema debut of popular Sri Lankan film actress Geetha Kumarasinghe.

Presidential Film Awards is a film award ceremony held in Sri Lanka. It is organized by the National Film Corporation along with the Presidential Secretariat and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. It was 1st awards in 1979 by President J. R. Jayewardene, and continue till 2004. The awards were not held from 2005 to 2014 when Mahinda Rajapakse was president. The award started to be presented again in 2015 by President Maithripala Sirisena, and last awarded by President Ranil Wickramasinghe in 2023.

Amarasiri Kalansuriya, popularly known as Kalan, was an actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theatre and television. Kalansuriya made his first film appearance alongside Vijaya Kumaratunga in Hanthana Kathawa. His next film Ahas Gauwa won him a best actor award in 1974. He was born in Kandy, and was an alumnus of Dharmaraja College.

Gehenu Lamai is a 1978 Sri Lankan Sinhala teenage drama film directed by Sumitra Peries and produced by her husband Lester James Peries for Lster Films. The film introduced Vasanthi Chathurani into Sinhala cinema. Along with her, film stars Ajith Jinadasa and Jenita Samaraweera in lead roles along with Shyama Anandan and Cyril Kothalawala. Music composed by Nimal Mendis. It is the 390th Sri Lankan film in the Sinhala cinema.

Don Bhathiyatissa Wijesurendra, popularly as Tissa Wijesurendra, was a Sri Lankan actor. One of the most popular actors of the 1970s, Wijesurendra played many dramatic roles in a career spanned for four decades. An innocent lover of Sinhala cinema at one time, Wijesurendra can be described as a symbol of popular cinema.

In November 2005 President of Sri Lanka Chandrika Kumaratunga awarded national honours to 231 individuals for distinguished services. The awards ceremony was held on 14 November 2005 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall in Colombo.

<i>Rashmi</i> (film) 2022 Sri Lankan film

Rashmi is a 2022 Sri Lankan Sinhala action comedy film directed and produced by Preethiraj Weeraratne. The film stars Upeksha Swarnamali, Pubudu Chathuranga and Akalanka Ganegama in lead role whereas Jayasekara Aponso, Lucky Dias and Duleeka Marapana made supportive roles. It is the last film to be screened before the death of veteran actor Wilson Karu. The cameo appearances of the film done by Mahendra Perera, Susila Kottage, Manel Wanaguru, Manel Chandralatha, Miyuri Samarasinghe and Ruwanthi Mangala.
