Apollonicon

The Apollonicon was a self-acting barrel organ, built by the English Organ builders Flight & Robson in London and presented to the public the first time in 1817. Said to have been the biggest barrel and finger organ ever built, it was an automatic playing machine with about 1,900 pipes and 45 organ stops. It was inspired by Johann Nepomuk Mälzel's Panharmonikon. It also had five keyboards, one of them used as the pedal keyboard, so the instrument could be played by a few persons in manual mode as well. [1]

A prototype for the machine was made by Flight & Robson in 1811 at the request of Lord Kirkwall, under the direction of the Earl's protégé, the blind organist John Purkis. (Purkis has previously composed at least on piece for the Panharmonikon). [2] Impromptu demonstrations of this machine at 101 St Martin's Lane (the firm's showrooms) attracted thousands of people. [3] The instrument was installed at Kirkwall's London home in Charles Street, Berkeley Square, where it impressed the Prince Regent (later King George 1V) at a dinner party in 1813. [2]

The success persuaded Flight & Robson to build a much larger self-playing machine, the Appollonicon. Purkis performed regular Saturday afternoon recitals on the instrument at St Martin's Lane for the next 21 years. Rachel Cowgill has called the Apollonicon recitals as "virtually synonymous with the establishment of the public organ recital in England....the first to be held in a secular venue and run on a purely commercial basis". [2]

The St Martin's Lane lease expired in 1845 and the Apollonicon was dismantled and re-assembled at the Music Hall in the Strand. In the 1860s it was extended with a sixth console and moved again, to the Royal Music Hall, Lowther Arcade, off the Strand, in 1868. [4]

The Panharmonicon was a musical instrument invented in 1805 by Johann Nepomuk Mälzel, a contemporary and friend of Beethoven. Beethoven composed his piece "Wellington's Victory" to be played on Mälzel's mechanical orchestral organ and also to commemorate Arthur Wellesley's victory over the French at the Battle of Vitoria in 1813. It was one of the first automatic playing machines, similar to the later Orchestrion.

Music in early modern Scotland includes all forms of musical production in Scotland between the early sixteenth century and the mid-eighteenth century. In this period the court followed the European trend for instrumental accompaniment and playing. Scottish monarchs of the sixteenth century were patrons of religious and secular music, and some were accomplished musicians. In the sixteenth century the playing of a musical instrument and singing became an expected accomplishment of noble men and women. The departure of James VI to rule in London at the Union of Crowns in 1603, meant that the Chapel Royal, Stirling Castle largely fell into disrepair and the major source of patronage was removed from the country. Important composers of the early sixteenth century included Robert Carver and David Peebles. The Lutheranism of the early Reformation was sympathetic to the incorporation of Catholic musical traditions and vernacular songs into worship, exemplified by The Gude and Godlie Ballatis (1567). However, the Calvinism that came to dominate Scottish Protestantism led to the closure of song schools, disbanding of choirs, removal of organs and the destruction of music books and manuscripts. An emphasis was placed on the Psalms, resulting in the production of a series of Psalters and the creation of a tradition of unaccompanied singing.

John Purkis, was an English organist and teacher. He was blind at birth. A child prodigy, Purkis studied with Thomas Grenville, also blind, and the organist at the Foundling Hospital in London.
