Arabiyya School

Al Madhrasathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya, more commonly known as Arabiyya School, is the first Arabic Islamic school in the Maldives, educating students from primary to upper secondary grades. The school was inaugurated on 8 February 1987 by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. The school has moved into several buildings since then. First, the school was moved to a new building in 2013 [1] and then in 2021, it was moved to the old foreign ministry building. [2] Again, in 2023, Arabiyya school was relocated to the old Dharumavantha School building.

The current school song was introduced in 2016, with lyrics authored by poet Abdulla Afeef. [3]

Education

There are three steps or groups of grades. Ibthidhaaee is similar to primary and middle school and includes grades one to six. Iudhaadhee is similar to secondary school, starting at grade seven and ending at grade nine. The group of students in grades ten to twelve belong to Saanavee, which is similar to higher secondary school. In grade ten, students choose a stream of study. They can pursue the science stream (Ilmee) or the arts stream (Adhabee). [4]

Zamzam Faarish

Zamzam Farish, a former Arabiyya School teacher was accused of making inappropriate comments to female students, attempting to build non-consensual relationships and harassing students. [5] [6] He has also denied the allegations made against him. Investigations are ongoing. [7] [8]

It currently has over 1500 students and 90 teachers.

The 2011–2013 Maldives political crisis began as a series of peaceful protests that broke out in the Maldives on 1 May 2011. They would continue, eventually escalating into the resignation of President Mohamed Nasheed in disputed circumstances in February 2012. Demonstrators were protesting what they considered the government's mismanagement of the economy and were calling for the ouster of President Nasheed. The main political opposition party in the country, the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party led by the former president of the country Maumoon Abdul Gayoom accused President Nasheed of "talking about democracy but not putting it into practice." The protests occurred during the Arab Spring.

David M. Sabatini is an American scientist and a former professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2002 to 2021, he was a member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. He was also an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 2008 to 2021 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2016. Izzudheen School is a school located in Malé, Maldives. It was inaugurated by former president, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. It is a single session school.
