Arina Kachan (born 5 March 1994) is a Belarusian judoka, who has been ranked number one in the world in the women's + 70 kg weight class. She has won multiple medals for her country at the IBSA World Games, IBSA European Judo Championships and the IBSA World Judo Championships.

Belarus country in Eastern Europe

Belarus, officially the Republic of Belarus, formerly known by its Russian name Byelorussia or Belorussia, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. The IBSA World Games or World Blind Games are an international multi-sport event, occurring every four years, organized by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA). The events enable blind and partially sighted athletes to compete in a number of sports. The first event took place at Madrid, Spain in 1998.

The IBSA European Judo Championships is an event organized by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA). It is a judo competition for visually impaired athletes. Organised biennially, the competition is not run during years when the IBSA World Judo Championships or Summer Paralympics are contested.

Career

Arina Kachan was born on 5 March 1994, [1] and competes for Belarus in judo. Initially in the under 70 kg weight class, she won a bronze medal at the International Blind Sports Federation World Games in Antalya, Turkey in 2011 and at the IBSA European Judo Championships in Crawley, England, also in that year. She was called up to the Belarus team for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, England, where she finished fifth after losing in a bronze medal match. [1]

Judo modern martial art, combat and Olympic sport

Judo was originally created in 1882 by Jigoro Kano (嘉納治五郎) as a physical, mental, and moral pedagogy in Japan. It is generally categorized as a modern martial art, which later evolved into a combat and Olympic sport. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Strikes and thrusts by hands and feet as well as weapons defenses are a part of judo, but only in pre-arranged forms and are not allowed in judo competition or free practice. A judo practitioner is called a judoka.

In 2014, Arina Kachan won a bronze medal in the women's + 70 kg weight class at the IBSA Judo World Championships held in Colorado, United States. [1] At the 2015 IBSA World Games in Seoul, South Korea, Kachan was defeated by Russian judoka Irina Kalyanova in the final, only winning the silver medal. [2] Later in the year, she took silver again at the IBSA European Judo Championships after being defeated by the world number four, Turkey's Mesem Tasbag. [3]

Going into the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Kachan was ranked first in her weight class, although was not considered to be the favourite – instead reigning Paralympic champion Yanping Yuan was expected to win. [4] Kachan was defeated on the way to the final, having been seeded for the tournament, [1] and fought Tasbag in a bronze medal match instead, where she was defeated and placed outside of the medals once again. [5] When the world rankings were released by the International Blind Sports Federation in January 2017, Kachan continued to be ranked first in the women's + 70 kg weight class. [6]

2016 Summer Paralympics fifteenth Summer Paralympic Games

The 2016 Summer Paralympics, the 15th Summer Paralympic Games, were a major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 7 September to 18 September 2016. The Games marked the first time a Latin American and South American city hosted the event, the second Southern Hemisphere city and nation, the first one being the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, and also the first time a Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) country hosted the event. These Games saw the introduction of two new sports to the Paralympic program: canoeing and the paratriathlon.

Ramona Brussig is a German judoka and two-time gold medal winner in Paralympic competition. She was born in Leipzig with visual impairments meaning that she competes in B2 classification events. Brussig has an identical twin sister, Carmen Brussig, also a gold-medal-winning visually-impaired judoka, who was born 15 minutes before her. Brussig began training in 1986 at the age of nine and made her senior international debut in 1998 at the World Games in Madrid. Though her sister lives in Switzerland, the pair like to meet up and train together when they can. They say that they do not have a sense of rivalry as they compete in different weight classes.
