Arise (research project)

ARISE is a Dutch scientific research program that aims to completely map biodiversity in the European territory of the Netherlands. In addition, the goal is to set up semi-automatic infrastructure that can identify species using image and sound recognition technology, radar data, and environmental DNA (eDNA). [1] [2]

The project was started in 2020 and is set to complete within five to ten years. At that point all extant multicellular species, regardless of size, should be incorporated into the system. [3] The project's name stands for Authoritative and Rapid Identification System for Essential biodiversity information. The project is a collaboration between Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden (coordinator), the University of Amsterdam, the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute and the University of Twente. [4] ARISE is being subsidized with 18 million euros by the Dutch Research Council (Dutch: NWO) as part of the "National Roadmap Large-Scale Scientific Infrastructure" (Dutch: Nationale Roadmap Grootschalige Wetenschappelijke Infrastructuur). Monitoring locations

At various locations in the Netherlands, monitoring locations have been set up to record biodiversity using various technologies. For example, in April 2021 a bird radar was put into place at the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam to observe bird migrations. [6] [7] [8] In November 2021, autonomous Diopsis-cameras were installed at the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen to monitor insect populations. [9]

The Westerdijk Institute, or Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute, is part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Pieter Baas was a Dutch botanist and an emeritus professor of plant systematics at the Leiden University, who served as director of the Rijksherbarium of Leiden University between 1991 and 1999. When the institute was faced with budget cuts in 1993 he managed to preserve the collection by joining it with the university collections of Wageningen and Utrecht. This led to the founding of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands in 1999. Baas subsequently became director of the institute and served until 2005. As a botanist, Baas specialised in wood anatomy, and was an elected fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science.

Trix is a Tyrannosaurus rex specimen excavated in 2013 in Montana, United States by a team of paleontologists from the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, the Netherlands and Black Hills institute of Geological Research in South Dakota. This Tyrannosaurus, over thirty years old – the oldest known Tyrannosaurus specimen – lived about 67 million years ago. It is considered to be the third most complete Tyrannosaurus found, with between 78% and 80% of its bone volume recovered. The specimen was named Trix after the former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. It is one of only two Tyrannosaurus specimens on permanent exhibit in mainland Europe. The other one is a specimen named Tristan on exhibit at the Natural History Museum of Berlin.

Christa Laetitia Deeleman-Reinhold is a Dutch arachnologist. She specializes in spiders from Southeast Asia and Southern Europe, particularly cave-dwelling and tropical spiders. She donated a collection of about 25,000 Southeast Asian spiders, the largest collection of Southeast Asian spiders in existence, to the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden. In addition to numerous articles, she has written the book Forest Spiders of South East Asia (2001).

The 2019–20 Hoofdklasse was the 47th season of the Hoofdklasse, the Netherlands's highest field hockey league. Observation.org is a worldwide platform of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists to collect, validate and share biodiversity observations. Observation.org may be accessed via its website or from its mobile applications like ObsIdentify. The Observation.org database holds 233 million nature observations and 79 million photos. It is published and hosted in the Netherlands under Dutch and European law by the non-profit foundation Observation International.
