Arrau Medal

The Arrau Medal was established by the Robert Schumann Society to memorialize its first honorary member, Claudio Arrau, who died in 1991. [1] The medal is awarded to a pianist who is especially committed to the spirit and tradition of Claudio Arrau's keyboard artistry.

The first recipient to be so honoured on 9 June 1994 was András Schiff. In 1997 the medal was awarded to Martha Argerich during the 6th International Schumann Festival, and in 2000 during the 7th International Schumann Festival to Murray Perahia. [2]

Murray Perahia

Murray David Perahia, KBE is an American pianist and conductor. He is widely considered as one of the greatest living pianists. He was the first North American pianist to win the Leeds International Piano Competition, in 1972. Known as a leading interpreter of Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann, among other composers, Perahia has won numerous awards, including three Grammy Awards from a total of 18 nominations, and 9 Gramophone Awards in addition to its first and only "Piano Award".

<i>Carnaval</i> (Schumann)

Carnaval, Op. 9, is a work by Robert Schumann for piano solo, written in 1834–1835 and subtitled Scènes mignonnes sur quatre notes. It consists of 21 short pieces representing masked revelers at Carnival, a festival before Lent. Schumann gives musical expression to himself, his friends and colleagues, and characters from improvised Italian comedy. He dedicated the work to the violinist Karol Lipiński.

Garrick Ohlsson

Garrick Olof Ohlsson is an American classical pianist. He is the only American to win first prize in the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition, in 1970. He also won first prize at the Busoni Competition in Italy and the Montreal Piano Competition in Canada. He was awarded the Avery Fisher Prize in 1994 and received the 1998 University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ohlsson has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards, winning one in 2008.

Christiane Oelze is a German operatic soprano. From 2003 to 2008, she taught singing at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. Since 2010 she taught at the Masterclass of Apeldoorn (Netherlands), since 2011 at the Musik Academy in Arosa and since 2012 at IRCAM in Paris.

The Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau is a classical music award. Since 1964 it has been awarded by the Lord Mayor of Zwickau. Robert Schumann was born in Zwickau. Between 1964 and 2002 the prize was awarded annually, since 2003 biennially. The award is given to outstanding singers, instrumentalists and ensembles as well as musicologists and musical institutions, who have rendered special service (sic) to cherishing and presenting Schumann’s musical and literary heritage as well as to the knowledge of his life and works. The prize is endowed with a total of €10,000. The winners receive a certificate and a bronze medal with the portrait of Schumann, created by the sculptor Gerhard Lichtenfeld.

Gisela Schäfer is a German internist. On her initiative, the Robert Schumann Society was founded on 20 March 1979 in Düsseldorf.

Wolfram Goertz is a German journalist, musician and musicologist. He coordinates the special outpatient clinic for musician medicine at the University Hospital of Düsseldorf.
