Artistes 8.8 Fund Raising Campaign (88水災關愛行動) was a major fund raising campaign held in Hong Kong for the victims of the 2009 Typhoon Morakot. The concert began at 7:30pm on 17 August 2009. [1] The 88 stood for 8 August, one of the day of the typhoon. The main host for the concert was HK actor Eric Tsang and Taiwan actress Sylvia Chang. [2] The show featured more than 200 stars mostly from Hong Kong. [3] The show was also tele-linked live to Taiwan and some of their stars. [2]

A number of other hosts also took part including Paw hee-ching, Harlem Yu, Wu hsiao-li (吳小莉), Astrid Chan (芷菁). [1] A theme song "Many hearts prevail" (滔滔千里心) was also part of the show. [3] Major banks such as Bank of China and Fubon Bank also took part in managing the funds. [4]

Harlem Yu Taiwanese singer and television host

Harlem Yu is a Taiwanese singer-songwriter, television host and businessman. He is particularly well-known for composing the theme song, Qíng Fēi Dé Yǐ, for the 2001 television drama, Meteor Garden. He made a cameo in both that version and the remake, Meteor Garden performing Qíng Fēi Dé Yǐ.

Alex Fong (singer) Hong Kong swimmer and singer

Alex Fong is a Hong Kong actor, singer and swimmer. He was nicknamed "Little Flying Fish" for his swimming achievements. As of 2016, Fong still holds several Hong Kong swimming records. He first represented Hong Kong at the age of 11. Fong has also represented Hong Kong at the Sydney Olympics in 2000. He holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Hong Kong. Fong caught the attention of record executives with his popularity amongst teenage girls and became a singer in 2001.

Miriam Yeung Hong Kong singer and actress

Miriam Yeung is a Hong Kong actress and singer. Before entering the entertainment business, she was a registered nurse at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Hong Kong. She studied at the Holy Family Canossian College Kowloon. She began her career as a singer and actress after coming third in the TVB 14th annual New Talent Singing Awards competition in 1995. In 2012, Yeung won the Best Actress Award at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards for Love in the Buff. In 2005, she was elected one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong.

Sammi Cheng Sau-man is a Hong Kong singer and actress. She is one of the most prominent female singers in Hong Kong, with album sales of over 25 million copies throughout the Asia-pacific. Most notably in the 1990s, she was dubbed by the media as the "Cantopop Queen" and diva. Having success in entertainment industry for about three decades, Cheng has also been regarded as one of the most popular Hong Kong artists known in Asia Pacific.

Wakin Chau Taiwanese singer-songwriter and actor

Wakin Chau, better known by his stage name Emil Chau predominantly throughout the 1980s and 1990s, is a Hong Kong-Taiwanese singer, songwriter and actor. Chau's popularity has spread throughout Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and parts of Southeast Asia. As of August 2007, he has released more than 40 albums and held several international concert tours.

Zhang Guoli is a Chinese actor and film director who was a xiangsheng actor before he started working on films and television series. He is mostly known for his roles playing the Emperor in various dramas involving Qing Dynasty imperial China. He has also hosted the CCTV New Year's Gala in 2014.

Angelica Lee is a Malaysian Chinese film actress and pop singer. She started her career in singing and later moved on to acting in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Lee starred in The Eye, the hit Asian horror film by the Pang Brothers, winning her the Golden Horse Award for Best Actress, Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Festival and a Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Award. She is among the very few Asian artists to be awarded Best Newcomer Awards at the Berlin Film Festival in 2001 for her role in Betelnut Beauty.

Julian Cheung Chi-lam, better known by his stage name Chilam, is a Hong Kong singer and actor. Cheung is popularly known for his role as Guo Jing in the 1994 TV series adaptation of the Wuxia novel, The Legend of the Condor Heroes, and also as Chi-Kin from the TVB drama Cold Blood Warm Heart (1996).

Rosamund Kwan Chi Lam, is a former Hong Kong actress, best known for starring as the female lead "Thirteenth Aunt" in the 1990s Once Upon a Time in China film series. She had since retired from acting in 2007.

Edison Chen controversy

Edison Chen tried to make an appearance into the fund raising campaign. Fellow actor Eric Tsang tried to talk HK station TVB into letting him in. TVB computer technicians were ready to put Chen's name up should he appear at the concert, but Chen was turned down by the station. He did not appear on stage. [5]

Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) is a television broadcasting company based in Hong Kong. The company operates five free-to-air terrestrial television channels in Hong Kong, with TVB Jade as its main Cantonese language service, and TVB Pearl as its main English service. TVB is headquartered at TVB City at the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate.

Will Pan Taiwanese-American singer, actor and entrepreneur

Wilber Pan, also known as Will Pan, is an American and Taiwanese singer, songwriter, rapper, actor and entrepreneur. He started his career as a host of Channel V programs. In 2011, Pan was awarded Best Actor for Endless Love (愛∞無限) at the 46th Golden Bell Awards, Taiwan's equivalent to the Emmy Awards.

Artistes 512 Fund Raising Campaign was a major fund raising campaign held in Hong Kong for the victims of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The concert was held on June 1, 2008, and began at 2:28pm, the time the earthquake had struck Sichuan on May 12. The show was 7 to 8-hours long, featuring more than 200 stars from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China. The theme song is lyrics rewriting of 海闊天空 sung by Beyond (band).

Typhoon Morakot Pacific typhoon in 2009

Typhoon Morakot, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Kiko, was the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan in recorded history. It wrought catastrophic damage in Taiwan, leaving 673 people dead and 26 missing, and causing roughly NT$110 billion in damages. The storm produced copious amounts of rainfall, peaking at 2,777 mm (109.3 in), far surpassing the previous record of 1,736 mm (68.35 in) set by Typhoon Herb in 1996. The extreme amount of rain triggered enormous mudflows and severe flooding throughout southern Taiwan. One landslide destroyed the entire town of Xiaolin killing over 400 people. The slow-moving storm also caused widespread damage in China, leaving eight people dead and causing $1.4 billion in damages. Nearly 2,000 homes were destroyed in the country and 136,000 more were reported to have sustained damage.

Artistes 414 Fund Raising Campaign (演藝界情系玉樹關愛行動) was a major fund raising campaign held at the Hong Kong Coliseum in Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong for the victims of the 2010 Yushu earthquake. The concert began at 6pm of 26 April 2010 lasting until 11pm. The 414 stood for 14 April, on the day of the earthquake. The theme song is lyrics rewriting of 憑著愛 sung by Su Rui.

Artistes 311 Love Beyond Borders (愛心無國界311燭光晚會) was a major fund raising campaign held in Hong Kong for the victims of the Japan 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The event was organized by the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild and began at 7pm on 1 April 2011 at Causeway Bay Victoria park. About HK$18 million were raised in this event alone, not counting other fund raisers. Converted into US Dollars, the charity concert raised approximately 2.31 million dollars.

Effects of Typhoon Morakot on Taiwan Flood during the Typhoon Morakot in 2009

Between August 6, 2009, and August 10, 2009, Taiwan was hit by Typhoon Morakot, which brought about unprecedented rainfall and flooding across the country. The incidents surrounding Typhoon Morakot are known as the Eight-Eight Flood (八八水災). The flooding is the most devastating flooding incident since the flooding caused by Typhoon Ellen in 1959. Typhoon Morakot is most remembered for the destruction of Siaolin Village in Jiasian, Kaohsiung.
