Regranting
PlacerArts has successfully managed a Regrant Program since 1988. This competitive process is an equitable means to identify, encourage and reward artists, art agencies and art initiatives, thereby improving both the quality and accessibility of art programs throughout Placer County.
Technical Assistance
PlacerArts provides ongoing technical assistance to Placer County's established and emerging artists, local art agencies, and art groups. PlacerArts is part of several event and initiative committees in the county and has been instrumental in fostering three community concert series, six art festivals, one national arts exhibition, three major multicultural celebrations and three art education programs.
Touring / Presenting
PlacerArts presents professional performing arts and community theatrical performances in varying venues. Additionally, through its popular stART program, PlacerArts sponsors presentations in more than 30 schools.
Galleries / Exhibitions
The Autumn Art Studios Tour is taking place Autumn 2004 featuring several artists throughout Western Placer County. Auburn Art Walk, whereby over 30 local businesses open their storefront wall or window spaces to area artists for a six-week period, has increased local awareness and business support of PlacerArts programs.
Art in Public Places Programs
PlacerArts was instrumental in convincing the City of Auburn to pass a Public Art Ordinance and in establishing the Auburn Arts Commission to manage future Public Art projects in the county seat. Placer County's Public Art policy is under development at this time. New public installations have been dedicated in Granite Bay, Roseville, Newcastle and Lincoln with PlacerArts assistance.
Arts in Education
Artist-in-school residencies are provided through PlacerArts's stART Program and matching funds pool. Initiated in 1991 through a PlacerArts Regrant, the pilot was developed by local city partner Lincoln Arts, and since 1995 administered by PlacerArts. In cooperation with the Office of Education, PlacerArts serves foster children and other youths at risk via Kaleidoscope Program for After School Arts and School/Community Violence Prevention Program.
Perspectives, a comprehensive bimonthly newsletter, regularly features county calendar of art events, reviews, calls for entries, current information, interviews, guest articles, and related ads. Perspectives is distributed by mail to PlacerArts members and targeted area residents as well as in person, to the public, via visitor centers, art centers, chambers, bookstores, coffee houses, schools, and libraries around the county.
Fairs / Festivals
PlacerArts presents two festivals: AGROart Festival, each October, at historic Griffith Quarry Park in Penryn featuring the quirky AGROart sculpture competition where only fruits and vegetables may be used. One Root Festival takes place in September in downtown Roseville and celebrates cultural diversity through food, art and music.
Conferences
Annually, PlacerArts provides a grant writing workshop for prospective Regrant applicants. In cooperation with the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Partnership, a workspace giving workshop provides an opportunity for state employees to contribute to PlacerArts. As co-chair for CALAA Region 3, PlacerArts planned together with co-chair Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council for the 1997 CALAA regional meeting and technical assistance workshops.
The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) is a contemporary performance and visual arts organization in Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. PICA was founded in 1995 by Kristy Edmunds. Since 2003, it has presented the annual Time-Based Art Festival (TBA) every September in Portland, featuring contemporary and experimental visual art, dance, theatre, film/video, music, and educational and public programs from local, national, and international artists. As of November 2017, it is led by Executive Director Victoria Frey and Artistic Directors Roya Amirsoleymani, Erin Boberg Doughton, and Kristan Kennedy.
Roseville is the largest city in Placer County, California, United States, in the Sacramento metropolitan area. As of 2016, the US Census Bureau estimated the city's population to be 132,683. Interstate 80 runs through Roseville and State Route 65 runs through part of the northern edge of the city.
The Boch Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit performing arts organization located in Boston, Massachusetts. It manages the historic Wang and Shubert Theatres on Tremont Street in the Boston Theater District, where it offers theatre, opera, classical and popular music, comedy, dance, and Broadway musicals. The Center also offers a diverse mix of educational workshops and community activities; collaborates with artists and local performing arts organizations; and, acts as a champion for the arts in the Greater Boston community by aggressively helping to make the arts an integral part of the community's collective, daily experience. It maintains partnerships with numerous arts organizations in Boston, including the Celebrity Series of Boston, Fiddlehead Theatre Company, Express Yourself, and more.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission was established in Sacramento, California, United States in 1977. The Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission is a public agency devoted to supporting, promoting and advancing the arts in the region. The mission of the Arts Commission is 'ADVANCING COMMUNITY THROUGH ARTS AND CULTURE'.
Arts Council Napa Valley (ACNV) is the officially designated local arts agency (LAA) for Napa County, California. Established in 1963, it became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 1981. ACNV advances the arts in Napa County through diverse cultural programs and community services responding to its three core initiatives: Cultural Marketing, Art in Public Spaces, and Arts in Education.
The Arts Orange County (AOC) is the official Orange County, California, USA arts council. It runs under the California state arts council, the California Arts Council (CAC). As of 2017, the organization's headquarters are in Irvine, California and the President is Richard Stein.
The San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) is the official San Francisco County, USA arts council.
The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission is the official arts council of Santa Barbara County, California, USA.
The Singapore Biennale is a contemporary art biennale in Singapore. The first Singapore Biennale operated as one of a lineup of Singapore 2006 events. Fumio Nanjo, Director of Tokyo's Mori Art Museum, has been reappointed Artistic Director of the Singapore Biennale 2008. Working with Mr Nanjo on Singapore Biennale 2008 are two curators: independent curator Joselina Cruz, formerly a curator at the Singapore Art Museum and the Lopez Museum in Manila; and Matthew Ngui, one of Singapore's leading artists in contemporary art.
The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC) is an agency that oversees arts activity throughout the Portland metropolitan area in Oregon, United States. It was established as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1995, replacing a bureau that had been shared by the City of Portland and Multnomah County – the Metropolitan Arts Commission. Today, RACC serves the tri-county region of Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties.
The Illinois Arts Council is a government agency of the state of Illinois formed to encourage development of the arts throughout Illinois. Founded in 1965 by the Illinois General Assembly, the Illinois Arts Council provides financial and technical assistance to artists, arts organizations, and community organizations with arts programming.
Florida Keys Council of the Arts is a leading cultural organization in the Florida Keys, and serves the population from Key Largo to Key West. A non-profit local arts agency, it makes grants, operates the Monroe County Art in Public Places program, sponsors seminars, and manages the on-line cultural calendar for the region. It also manages the County's Cultural Umbrella grants process, under the Tourism Development Council and serves as a leading advocate for cultural tourism on lower Florida. In 1998, the Florida Keys Council of the Arts was designated by the Board of Monroe County Commissioners as the area's Local Arts Agency as provided by Florida Statute 286.011.
The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is an art museum in Downtown San Jose, California, USA. Founded in 1977, the museum is the first in the United States devoted solely to quilts and textiles as an art form. Holdings include a permanent collection of over 550 quilts, garments and ethnic textiles, emphasizing artists of the 20th- and 21st-century, and a research library with over 500 books concerning the history and techniques of the craft.
Youth in Arts is a non-profit organization that provides visual and performing arts instruction to public and private school students and enriches the community with cultural events. Youth in Arts has been providing arts education to students in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1970. It is based in San Rafael, Ca. The Artists in Schools program brings artists into classrooms to teach visual and performing arts in extended residencies or shorter workshop programs and also provides training for teachers and parents in supporting students' learning and development through the arts.
The culture of Augusta, Georgia is influenced by the many different perspectives and histories of its community members, as well as its own history. The large African American population of the area as well as the city's rural surroundings have affected the types of festivals and culture produced within the city. Another major influence on the culture of the city is the annual Masters golf tournament held in April of each year. The most prolific cultural medium produced by the city is its musicians, as evidenced by James Brown, Jessye Norman, and Wycliffe Gordon. Though notably, the writer Frank Yerby and visual artist Jasper Johns were Augusta natives as well.
Arts Etobicoke was founded in 1973 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They are an incorporated not-for-profit arts council governed by a
volunteer Board of Directors from business, the arts and the community. They serve thousands of students in their arts education programs, a membership of 50 arts organizations, 200 individual members, 60 individual artists and clients in an Art Rental program, hundreds of artists through their arts programming and exhibitions, 22 scholarship recipients, the general public and numerous project partners.
The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery is located in the Barnsdall Art Park in Los Angeles, California. It focuses on the arts and artists of Southern California.
The Arts Council~Haliburton Highlands is a not-for-profit organization that "strives to provide a strong voice for the arts in Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada; serve as a catalyst for community economic development through the arts; and, through the facilitation of collaborative relationships among artists, organizations, businesses and government, contribute to the vibrancy of the arts and community life."
B Street Theatre is a 501c3 non-profit theater located in Sacramento, California. It was founded by actor Timothy Busfield in 1986 as Theatre for Children, Inc., the company’s first focus was a touring theatre company for children. The B Street Theatre School Tour was and continues to be extremely popular in the community— performing 12 times per week, 38 weeks a year. The School Tour has received critical acclaim by the media and educators. It is estimated that 3.6 million California children have attended performances since B Street Theatre's inception. For many children, The B Street Theatre School Tour is their only exposure to the live theatre in Northern California.
Marty Pottenger is an award-winning American playwright, performance artist and theatre director. Pottenger is a pioneer in the community arts and arts-based civic dialogue movement. Joan Shigekawa, former Acting Chairman for the National Endowment for the Arts, named Pottenger as one of her favorite artists "...for her deep engagement with the lives of working people."
