Ashish Goyal is a recipient of the National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities 2010, which is India's highest civilian award for an individual with disability. [1] He was awarded the honor on 3 December 2010 by the President of India, Pratibha Patil, in New Delhi. [2] In 2015, he was named as a Young Global Leader [3] by the World Economic Forum. [4] [5]

Biography

Goyal was born and raised in Mumbai, India. He was born with perfect vision, but developed retinitis pigmentosa, which caused his vision to deteriorate starting at the age of 7. By the age of 22, he was entirely blind. He dealt with this adversity by focusing his energies on academics. Goyal ranked second in his class at Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai and won the 2003 Dun and Bradstreet Best Student Awards. He worked at ING Vysya Bank as a fixed income trader in Bangalore for three years before enrolling at Wharton in 2006.

Goyal was the first blind student at Wharton Business School in Philadelphia. [6] Here, he was selected by his peers to receive the Joseph Wharton Award. [7] This is given to the individual who best represents the "Wharton Way of Life". He graduated from Wharton in 2008, earning an MBA with honors.

In 2008, he started his international career at J. P. Morgan’s London office and is credited with the distinction of becoming the first visually impaired trader in the world, as well as being the first blind trader to work on Wall Street. [8] [9] He started on the prop trading desk at J. P. Morgan and spent a couple of years in their CIO office. [10] Since then, he has managed money as a Portfolio Manager for some of the world’s leading Macro Hedge funds such as BlueCrest Capital, Citadel Investment Group and Tharo Management.

Goyal is a motivational speaker now and has spoken at the London Stock Exchange, the World Economic Forum at Davos, [11] the Sohn Charity Conference and other corporate and nonprofit events on his life, investing, the global economy and markets.

His involvement in charity work spans from supporting research on Vedic sciences, Ayurveda, Yoga and has raised thousands of dollars annually for charities including educating underprivileged children in India, Blindness Research and International Peace. He has served as a trustee and an advisor to many international non-profit organizations. He is also a supporter of theatre and arts.

Goyal is a big sports fan and played cricket and tennis before he lost his sight. After moving to London, he took up blind cricket and represented the Metro London Sports Club in 2009, [12] where his team won the UK domestic blind cricket tournament. [9]

Sashi Parvatha Reddi is an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and a philanthropist. Sashi Reddi was the CEO and founder of AppLabs. Sashi Reddi was born in Madras, India and later migrated to the US. He grew up in Guntur but attended boarding school at Lawrence School, Lovedale. He is a recipient of the Louis Braille Award from the Pennsylvania Council for the Blind, for the year 2017. He currently sits on the advisory board of the Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs and the advisory board of IIT Hyderabad.

The All India Chess Federation for the Blind (AICFB) is the governing body for the game of Chess among visually impaired in India. It was formed in 1997 with a view to promoting the game of chess among the visually impaired all over the country. It is registered under Society Registration Act, 1860; Public Trust Act, 1951 and Income Tax Act, 1961 – Section 12A.

Anthony Gerard Larkin is an English former professional footballer, and manager and coach of the England blind football team, which is based at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford. Larkin is also the former head of sport and recreation at the college, as well as Patron of the disability sports charity British Blind Sport.

The Birmingham Royal Institution for the Blind (BRIB) is a registered charity in the United Kingdom which has provided education, technology, guidance and support for Birmingham's visually impaired community for over 150 years.

Mitra Jyothi established in 1990, is a charitable trust registered under Indian Trust Act based in Bangalore. Its aims to support the visually impaired through various programs it offers. These programs include Talking Book Library, Computer Training Center, Independent Living Skills, Braille Transcription Center and Job Placement. It received State Award in 2010 from the Directorate of Disabled Welfare and Senior Citizens, Government of Karnataka for its exemplary service for persons with disabilities. Mitra Jyothi is also a member of the DAISY Forum of India (DFI). DFI is a forum of Not for profit organizations from India who are involved in production of books and reading materials in accessible formats for persons who cannot read normal print.

Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled, founded in 1997, is a non-profit organization providing education, accommodation, food, vocational training and placement based rehabilitation. It is based in Bangalore, India with centers across India and abroad. The organization is affiliated to the World Blind Union and received Special UN Consultative Status in 2015.

Darpan Inani is a prolific blind Indian chess player and a Chartered Accountant from Vadodara. He won 2 gold medals - individual as well as team gold medal - at Para Asian Games held in China in October, 2023. He had a career peak FIDE elo rating of 2135, the highest ever elo rating to have been attained by any visually impaired player from India as of January, 2024. He won a bronze medal on his respective board in the 16th World Chess Olympiad for visually impaired held in Greece in 2021. He was also a bronze medalist at the 2013 World Junior Championship in Belgrade. He is the youngest player to have ever won the National blind chess championships. He is the only Indian visually impaired chess player to have ever won international first prize at the Creon Open chess tournament in France in August 2018. This was a historic moment for Indian chess when a visually impaired player won first prize in international open sighted tournament in his rating category. He is honoured with the Yuva Ratna award by All India Marwari Yuva Manch in April 2018 in Siliguri, West Bengal. He is the recipient of the Navratna Award - 2018 awarded by Yuma Television. He has featured in a commercial for HDFC Life.

Jawahar Lal Kaul is an Indian social worker and the founder of the All India Conference of the Blind, an NGO working towards the rehabilitation of the blind. He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2014, which bestowed on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the field of Social Work.

Tiffany Brar is an Indian community service worker who became blind as an infant due to oxygen toxicity. Brar is the founder of the Jyothirgamaya Foundation, a non-profit organization that teaches life skills to blind people of all ages. She is a trainer, a campaigner for disability awareness and an advocate for an inclusive society.

Khda Reh Ke Dalvaunga, popularly known as Jagdishbhai, is an Indian visually impaired social worker and one of the 3 founders of the Blind People's Association of India, along with his wife and Kanubhai Ambalal Thaker an Ahmedabad based non governmental organization promoting the interests of the people with physical disabilities. He is a recipient of the Indian civilian honour of the Padma Shri.

The social activities taken upon by her focuses on promoting education and generating job opportunities for people with disabilities. She has won National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in 2008. She is the founder of Mitra Jyothi which serves people with disabilities.

Shekhar Naik is an Indian national blind cricketer and a former captain of the India national blind cricket team. He captained India to victories at the T20 Blind Cricket World Cup in 2012 and Blind Cricket World Cup in 2014. In 2017, the Government of India awarded Shekhar Naik with Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian honour. He is a Right-handed batsman and also a wicket-keeper.

Sandeep Goyal is an Indian businessperson, media entrepreneur and author. He is the founder and current chairman of the Mogae Group. He was also the founder-chairman and former JV partner of Dentsu in India and Middle East. At the end of April, 2021, he purchased a 100% stake in Rediffusion and Everest, two of India’s largest independent agencies, and took charge as Managing Director. People with disabilities in Sri Lanka typically face significant stigma and discrimination. The main causes for disability in Sri Lanka are poor hygiene, lack of medical care, the prevalence of 30 years of war, the aftereffects of the 2004 tsunami, and an increase in accidents.

Nidhi Goyal is an Indian disability and gender rights activist who has been appointed to the UN Women Executive Director's advisory group. Goyal is the founder and executive director of Mumbai-based NGO Rising Flame and works in the areas of sexuality, gender, health and rights for women and girls with disabilities. She is also a stand-up comedian.
