Ashok Chopra (born 26 February 1949) is a publisher, author, editor, and literary columnist. [2] Author of Memories of Fire: A Novel, [3] A Scrapbook of Memories: My Life with the Rich, the Famous and the Scandalous [4] and Of Love and Other Sorrows, [5] he has co-authored Agnostic Khushwant: There Is No God [6] with the Indian author-columnist Khushwant Singh and A Grain of Sand in the Hourglass of Time [7] with Arjun Singh, which he completed after his death on March 4, 2011, in 2012. [8] He was executive editor with Vikas Publishing House, vice-president Macmillan India, publishing director UBS Publishers, executive director and publisher of the India Today Book Club and Books Today, as well as chief executive and publisher of HarperCollins Publishers India. [9] [10] [11] Presently, he is the chief executive of Hay House Publishers in India. [12]

Early life and journalistic career

Ashok Chopra was born in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, the son of an artist, B. R. Chopra.[ citation needed ] He did his schooling from St. Edward's School, Shimla and went on to do his undergraduate studies from S. D. Bhargava College later. He joined the diploma course in Mass Communication and Journalism in 1971, of the Panjab University in Chandigarh, and further worked with theatre historian Balwant Gargi, for a year, at the Department of Indian Theatre in Chandigarh. From here he embarked to his career in Journalism, in 1973, as a sub-editor with The Tribune (Chandigarh). Besides contributing articles and features regularly he also acted as the paper's film and theatre critic. [13] [14]

In June 1975, he joined the Indian Express Limited as its Himachal Pradesh correspondent based in Shimla. [15] He left journalism for book publishing in April 1978. [16] Chopra also wrote book reviews, features and opinion pieces regularly for India Today. [17] [18]

Presently he lives in Gurgaon. [19]

Thakur Vishva Narain Singh was the first braille editor of India and an eminent journalist. He served as braille editor in the publication section of the National Institute of Visually Handicapped in Dehradun. After his retirement, he continued to write and worked with local dailies in the city.

Divya Himachal is a Hindi Newspaper of Himachal Pradesh, having circulation in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh (UT). The newspaper was launched on 29 December 1997 and now has four editions namely Dharamshala, Shimla, Chandigarh and Punjab. The newspaper has its head office at Matour which also includes the "Samarpan Printers", the printing press from which DH is published. The second printing press was established in Baddi (HP) and became functional on April 1, 2017, extending the reach further. The Government College of Arts, Chandigarh is an art institute in Chandigarh, India. Established in 1951 by SL Prashar, it offers professional education in art to students from over 68 years. This institute is one among the first three art institutions of India. It has a history of almost 132 years, initially, it was initially established as Mayo School of Industrial art in 1875 for purpose to provide industrial drawing as the world was on industrial revolution. John Lockwood Kipling was appointed as the first principal of the institution, which is now active as National College of Arts in Lahore. It came up on 16 August 1951 as splinter Mayo School of Arts, Lahore in Pakistan after Partition of India. In 1951 it was first established as Government School of Art and craft at Shimla, the capital of Punjab and subsequently Govt. College of art and craft, Chandigarh. On re-organization of Punjab, the control came under Chandigarh Administration. This institution is situated in Sector 10 C, adjoining the Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh.

Shriniwas Joshi is a columnist, theatre artist, and retired civil servant from Himachal Pradesh, India. As a columnist, Joshi is especially known for his column 'Vignettes' in the Indian English daily The Tribune, through which he has documented people, history, places, and idiosyncratic things all across Himachal Pradesh. As a theatre figure, he has been associated for decades with Shimla's historic Gaiety Theatre, for which he has written, acted in, and directed a number of plays. As a retired civil servant, Joshi has been active in various civic causes in Shimla, including heritage conservation, environmental protection, and the promotion of arts.

Chandra Haas Bhasin, better known by his pen-name Raaja Bhasin, is a writer, historian, public speaker, and curator from Himachal Pradesh, India. He is noted as an authority on the cultural and architectural history of colonial-era Shimla, the erstwhile summer capital of the British Raj and the present-day capital of the Himachal Pradesh state. Bhasin is particularly known for his book Simla: the Summer Capital of British India, first published in 1992. He has appeared as an expert on Shimla in several popular travel and historical documentaries, including ones made by William Dalrymple, Michael Palin, Gurinder Chaddha, and Anthony Bourdain. Bhasin is also regarded as an expert on various aspects of Himachal Pradesh, including tourism and cultural heritage - also subjects on which he has written and lectured extensively.
