The Asian American Artists Collective (AAAC), also called "The Collective" by its members, was an informal network of Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) artists based in Chicago. Founded on August 21, 2001, AAAC consisted of 100 artists from various sectors of the art community and used intersections of art, community, and activism to confront social injustices that challenged the APIA community. Though AAAC ceased to exist in 2005, various individual artists from the collective remain active within the greater art community.
The Asian American Artists Collective was founded by Anida Yoeu Ali (formerly Anida Yoeu Esguerra) and Marlon Esguerra.
Anida and Marlon (then husband and wife collaborators), founded the group because of their positive experiences in the early 1990s with collectivist action through their undergraduate literary magazine, Monsoon, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign published by the Asian American Artists Collective. The group also formed out of the late 1990s and early 2000s spoken word tour with Emily Chang and Dennis “Denizen Kane” Kim in the group I Was Born with Two Tongues which they described as a “panAsian American spoken word quartet.” They were also influenced by the Seattle collective Isangmahal.
Along with artist and curator Larry Lee, Anida and Marlon began to merge with the FAAIM, another Asian-American artist collective. They felt the need to collectivize across Asian ethnic lines in reaction to the anti-Muslim climate following the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. With their members’ heightened awareness of anti-Asian violence, the Collective distributed information packets called "Remembering Vincent Chin" and "RE:9/11".
In the summer of 2003, The Collective hosted the 2nd National APIA Spoken Word and Poetry Summit in Chicago. Ali, as one of its founders, cites the AAAC's attempt to incorporate as a nonprofit as a key factor in their demise.
Though members participated in general activities hosted by AAAC, some artists also splintered into various sub-groups. Collectively, they put together annual interdisciplinary shows at the Foundation for Asian American Independent Media (FAAIM) April Asian American Showcase at the Gene Siskel Film Center.
The Collective consisted of four subgroups. Mango Tribe was an APIA women's feminist performance collective that promoted collaboration and encouraged artistic activism through theater and education. It was a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-disciplinary ensemble with 22 APIA women from Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis. Kitchen Poems was a writing circle inspired by workshops and founded by Filipina-American author M. Evelina Galang. Young Asians With Power! (YAWP!) was created as a safe space for Asian American Pacific Islander youth writers.
Hapa is a Hawaiian word for someone of multiracial ancestry. In Hawaii, the word refers to any person of mixed ethnic heritage, regardless of the specific mixture. The term is used for any multiracial person of partial East Asian, Southeast Asian, or Pacific Islander mixture in California. In what can be characterized as trans-cultural diffusion or the wave model, this latter usage has also spread to Massachusetts, Ohio, and Oregon.
Artivism is a portmanteau word combining art and activism, and is sometimes also referred to as Social Artivism.
Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA) is a nonprofit arts organization that supports and promotes the work of Asian American women artists in the visual, literary, and performing arts through activities such as art events, lectures, artists salons, and member exhibitions.
OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates is a non-profit organization founded in 1973, whose stated mission is to advance the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in the United States.
Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha is a U.S. /Canadian poet, writer, educator and social activist. Their writing and performance art focuses on documenting the stories of queer and trans people of color, abuse survivors, mixed-race people and diasporic South Asians and Sri Lankans. A central concern of their work is the interconnection of systems of colonialism, abuse and violence. They are also a writer and organizer within the disability justice movement.
Pacific Islander Americans are Americans who are of Pacific Islander ancestry. For its purposes, the United States census also counts Aboriginal Australians as part of this group.
The Asian American Arts Centre (AAAC) is a non-profit organization located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. Founded in 1974, it's one of the earliest Asian American community organizations in the United States. The Arts Centre presents the ongoing developments between contemporary Asian & Asian American art forms and Western art forms through the presentation of performance, exhibitions, and public education. AAAC's permanent collection, which it has accumulated since 1989, contains hundreds of contemporary Asian American art works and traditional/folk art pieces. The organization also has an Artists Archive which documents, preserves, and promotes the presence of Asian American visual culture in the United States since 1945. This includes the East Coast, especially the greater New York area; the West Coast; and some artists in Canada, Hawaii, and overseas. The artists include Asian Americans producing art, Asian artists who are active in the United States, and other Americans who are significantly influenced by Asia. Pan-Asian in outlook, the Arts Centre's understanding of 'Asia' encompasses traditions and influences with sources ranging from Afghanistan to Hawaii.
Asian people are the people of Asia. The term may also refer to their descendants.
Marcel Diallo is an American musician, poet, artist and community builder, known for his founding of the Black Dot Artists Collective, The Black New World and his revitalization efforts in West Oakland's historic, predominantly African-American Prescott neighborhood aka the Lower Bottoms.
Lenore Chinn is an American artist best known for her American realist paintings and her queer activism. Chinn was a founding member of Lesbians in the Visual Arts and Queer Cultural Center (QCC) and served on the San Francisco Human Rights Commission. She is currently based in San Francisco, California.
Timothy Terrell West, better known as Tim'm T. West, is an American educator and multi-discipline performance artist, author, hip hop recording artist, poet, activist, and youth advocate. Humboldt State University notes West as a Renaissance man who has achieved success as a performer, activist, author, teacher, and poet. He has been featured in many documentaries about hip hop culture, in addition to his books, he is widely anthologized, and has produced nine hip hop albums including with Deep Dickollective. West has been interviewed by an array of media outlets from Newsweek to the New York Times. He was awarded a "2013 Esteem Award", and in 2015 was named an LGBTQ icon.
Tomie Arai is an American artist and community activist. Her works consist of multimedia site-specific art pieces that deal with topics of gender, community, and racial identity. She is highly involved in community discourse, co-founding the Chinatown Art Brigade.
The Asian American Movement was a sociopolitical movement in which the widespread grassroots effort of Asian Americans affected racial, social and political change in the U.S., reaching its peak in the late 1960s to mid-1970s. During this period Asian Americans promoted anti-war and anti-imperialist activism, directly opposing what was viewed as an unjust Vietnam war. The American Asian Movement (AAM) differs from previous Asian American activism due to its emphasis on Pan-Asianism and its solidarity with U.S. and international Third World movements such as the Third World Liberation Front.
Wei-Ling Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, founded in 2002 by Lim Wei-Ling. It is committed to the development of contemporary art in Malaysia, encourages passion for art, and supports the next generation of young emerging artists. The gallery has published over 121 art publications in Malaysia, which include exhibition catalogues, brochures, and artists' books.
Kay Ulanday Barrett is a published poet, performer, educator, food writer, cultural strategist, and transgender, gender non-conforming, and disability advocate based in New York and New Jersey, whose work has been showcased nationally and internationally. Their second book, More Than Organs received a 2021 Stonewall Honor Book Award by the American Library Association and is a 2021 Lambda Literary Award for Transgender Literature Finalist. They are a 2020 James Baldwin Fellowship recipient, three-time Pushcart Prize Nominee, and two-time Best of the Net Nominee. Barrett's writing and performance centers on the experience of queer, transgender, people of color, mixed race people, Asian, and Filipino/a/x community. The focus of their artistic work navigates multiple systems of oppression in the context of the U.S.
DarkMatter was an art and activist collaboration between Janani Balasubramanian and Alok Vaid-Menon, known for their spoken word performances and queer/trans South Asian themes.
Basement Workshop emerged as the first Asian-American political and arts organization in New York City, in existence from 1970 to 1986. Created during the Asian American Movement, it became an umbrella organization for a diverse group of young Asian-Americans seeking creative and new ways of intersecting artistic expression with political and community activism. The rise of the Black Power Movement and protests against the Vietnam War provided a partial yet weighty backdrop for Basement’s inception.
Larry Lee is an American multimedia artist, curator, and professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). He works primarily in video, installation and sculptural projects with a strong conceptual approach. His work focuses on political, cultural and historical issues concerning the Asian American experience. He calls this "Orientalia" which he describes as "[having] to do with... the physical and nonphysical, with what people associate with being oriental."
Anida Yoeu Ali is a Cambodian-American artist. Her works include span performance, art installation, videos, and images. Installation art is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works that often are site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space.
The Asian American Feminist Collective (AAFC) was founded in 2018 and is a group of scholars, organizers, and writers that seeks to engage in intersectional feminist politics grounded within communities that include East, Southeast, and South Asian, Pacific Islander, multi-ethnic and diasporic Asian identities. The AAFC aims to create spaces for identity exploration, political education, community building, and advocacy through the events, workshops, and resources that they provide. The AAFC has attributed their ability to think and act critically in community activism to the work of Black feminist thought and feminist movements in developing nations.
