Asim Abbasi is a British-Pakistani film director, screenwriter and producer. He also has his own production company, Indus Talkies.

Career

In 2012, he made the short film Anathema. In 2013, he made two more short films, Once A Man & Whore. Two years later, he made his fourth short film named Little Red Roses. All four were shot in the United Kingdom.

In 2018, Abbasi's first feature film, Cake, was lauded by critics. The Guardian's Mike McCahill wrote "Uncommonly alert to small, telling details, while more expansive in its attitudes, the result proves far richer and worldlier than anything previously observed coming down the Khyber Pass." [1] [2] [3] Cake was also selected to be Pakistan's submission to the 91st Academy Awards for best Foreign Language Film. [4] [5] [6] [7]

In 2020, Abbasi further established himself as a writer & director with his critically acclaimed webseries, Churails (witches), which was hailed as a radically progressive shift from the mainstream narrative of Pakistani television.

The Legend of Maula Jatt is a 2022 Pakistani Punjabi-language action drama film directed and written by Bilal Lashari. The film is an adaptation of the 1979 Lollywood cult classic film Maula Jatt. Produced by Ammara Hikmat and Asad Jamil Khan under the production banner of Lashari Films and Encyclomedia. It is based on the characters and stories by Nasir Adeeb. The film stars Fawad Khan as the titular character with Hamza Ali Abbasi, Humaima Malik, Faris Shafi and Mahira Khan. In the film, a local folk hero named Maula Jatt takes on his archnemesis and the leader of a brutal clan, Noori Natt.

Cake is a 2018 Pakistani comedy drama film which is directed by Asim Abbasi. The film is produced by Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari and is a joint production by Asim Abbasi's United Kingdom-based production company Indus Talkies, and a Pakistani film production company ZAB Films. The film stars Sanam Saeed and Aamina Sheikh as lead characters alongside Adnan Malik in his film debut.

Churails is a 2020 ZEE5 exclusive and Zindagi Original Pakistani drama web series. It is written and directed by Asim Abbasi. The web series stars Sarwat Gilani, Mehar Bano, Nimra Bucha and Yasra Rizvi in lead roles. It is produced by Asim Abbasi along with Mo Azmi and Shailja Kejriwal. It revolves around Karachi's secret detectives whose mission it is to expose the city's unfaithful, elite husbands. It became available for streaming on the OTT platform ZEE5 on 11 August 2020.
