Assurity Life Insurance Company (Assurity) is an American mutual insurance organization based in Lincoln, Nebraska. Assurity employs approximately 400 associates and is licensed to conduct business in all U.S. states and the District of Columbia, except New York. [1] [2] The Assurity Life Insurance Company of New York conducts business within the state of New York. [3]

In December 2015, Assurity became a certified B corporation, the largest insurance company at the time to earn that designation. [4] [5]

History

Assurity was created as the result of a merger of three Lincoln, Nebraska insurance companies: Woodmen Accident and Life, Security Financial Life, and Lincoln Direct Life. The merger of the companies concluded in 2007.

Woodmen Accident and Life began in 1890 using the name Modern Woodmen Accident Association. Security Financial Life began in 1895 using the name Security Mutual Life. Lincoln Direct Life began in 1896 using the name The Royal Highlanders. [1] [6]

By 2022, Assurity was hosting three podcasts. Tips from the Insurance Pros and Focus on Voluntary Benefits center on the individual and worksite sales markets, respectively. [7] Guests have included representatives from Whole Foods Market, Cornell University and the Arbor Day Foundation.

Rating and finances

A.M. Best Company rated Assurity Life Insurance Company as A− (excellent) and the company received an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau. [8] As of 2021, Assurity had more than $2.66 billion in assets under management. [9]

Opened in 2011, Assurity Center was the first large office building in Lincoln to receive LEED Gold Certification. [10]

Assured Life Association, formerly Woodmen of the World and/or Assured Life Association, having officially changed its name to on January 1, 2015, is a fraternal benefit society based in Denver, Colorado, whose beginnings can be traced to the same founder as Modern Woodmen of America and Woodmen of the World in 1890. Today, Assured Life Association is not affiliated with either organization. Aside from offering insurance benefits the organization is a non-profit Life Insurer organized to give back revenues to its member customers through direct benefits such as college scholarships and summer camp grants for youth and through discounts on other products and services. The Society also has a member-directed matching charitable giving program. Four national community service projects are promoted among Society member customers each year.

Columbian Mutual Life Assurance Society was an American fraternal benefit order. It was originally organized in 1903, under the laws of Georgia, as "Eminent Household of Columbian Woodmen" (sometimes referred to as "Columbian Woodmen of Georgia" or simply, "Columbian Woodmen". When this organization merged with the "Columbia Woodmen of Mississippi" in 1921, the name of the merged institutions was changed to "Columbian Mutual Life Assurance Society". In 1922, its home office moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where it erected a 22-story office building, known as Columbian Mutual Tower. The Society paid sick and death benefits and admitted both men and women. In 1924, it had 831 subordinate lodges with a benefit membership of 24,039.
