Athena Pathway is a British sailing team created in 2022 to compete for the 2024 Youth and Women's editions of the America's Cup.

The team was established in 2022 with the ambition of building a Long-Term, Equitable Pathway in High-Performance Sailing an winning the 2024 Youth and Women's America's Cup for Great Britain and to 'bring the cup home' to the United Kingdom and also . In 2024 the team challenged for the Youth and Women's America's Cup in Barcelona, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Formation and facilities

Athena Pathway, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron, was launched in August 2022 by Hannah Mills OBE and Sir Ben Ainslie, two of Britain's most successful Olympic sailors, with the aim of fast-tracking development in high-performance sailing and bringing diversity to the sport and the UK marine industry more broadly. [1]

Led by Mills, the Pathway was established for female and youth athletes. Hoping to fast-track development in professional sailing, level the playing field in high-performance foiling and bring equality and diversity into the sport at its highest level, both on and off the water. The core of the pathway is a commitment to sustainability, with an ethos of 'People, Planet and Purpose', encouraging athletes to use their voices in the fight against climate change. [2]

Athena Pathway came 1st overall in both their qualification group and the semi-final series. However, they lost the 'winner takes all' match race to Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.

    The 2024 America's Cup was the 37th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. It was contested from 12 October 2024 as a first-to-seven-wins match-race series in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, between Taihoro, representing the defender, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron; and Britannia, representing the Royal Yacht Squadron of the United Kingdom, which won the Louis Vuitton Challenger Selections Series, also in Barcelona, on 4 October 2024. It was the first time the UK has sailed in an America’s Cup match since 1964.

    The 2027 America's Cup is the 38th staging of the America's Cup yacht race. It is the oldest continuous competition in international sport, and among the world's most prestigious sporting trophies. The 38th America's Cup will be raced in a match-race series between a yacht sailed by Emirates Team New Zealand representing the defender Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, and a yacht representing the challenging yacht club. The challenging yacht club will either be the one which is first to issue a valid challenge to the defending club under the Deed of Gift of the America's Cup and becomes a sole challenger, or the one which wins a Challenger Series organised by the first valid challenger, which is called 'the Challenger of Record'.     The AC40 is a one design racing yacht used for the 2024 America's Cup preliminary events and planned to be used for the 2024 Unicredit Youth America's Cup and 2024 Puig Women's America's Cup matches. The 12 m (39 ft) monohulls feature wing-like sailing hydrofoils mounted on canting arms, a soft double-skinned wingsail, and no keel.

    The 2024 PUIG Women's America's Cup is the inaugural Women's Americas Cup and will be held in Barcelona, Spain. Both the Youth and Women's America's Cup will use the America's Cup 40 AC40 class, a one-design 12 m (40 ft) foiling monohull class. The yachts have 4 crew onboard and many athletes also competed in the youth America's Cup. There are no age restrictions for athletes.

    The 2024 Unicredit Youth America's Cup is the 3rd Youth Americas Cup and will be held in Barcelona, Spain from 17–26 September. Both the Youth and Women's America's Cup will use the America's Cup 40 AC40 class, a one-design 12 m (40 ft) foiling monohull class. The yachts have 4 crew onboard and teams can have mixed crews with many female athletes competing in the youth and 2024 PUIG Women's America's Cup. All athletes must aged between 18-25.
