Augusto Sta. Maria (born 1948or1949 [1] )is a Filipino retired volleyball coach who mentored the Philippine women's national team and the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses volleyball team.

Career

A native of Calabanga, Camarines Sur [2] , Santamaria has coached the Philippine women's national team in multiple occasions. [3] He coach the squad which played in the 1997 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship [4] and the 1997 Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta. [2]

Sta. Maria has also led the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses volleyball team as its head coach last guiding them in University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 69 in 2007. [2] UST won the women's volleyball title in that season. [1] He suffered a stroke in 2008 which ended his coaching career. [2]

The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) volleyball tournament is divided into four divisions, namely men's, women's, boys' and girls'. Volleyball is a mandatory sport in the women's division. The UAAP volleyball tournament was held in the first semester of the school year until the UAAP Board decided to move it to the second semester in Season 69. This decision was made so that the games can be televised to improve its popularity.

The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) is the top-level women's professional volleyball league in the Philippines organized by Sports Vision Management Group, Inc. The league began in 2004 as the Shakey's V-League (SVL), a women's collegiate league. In 2017 the league was renamed into Premier Volleyball League. From 2011 to 2020, the league was open to participation of corporate clubs and other non-collegiate teams. The league status turned professional in 2021.

The rivalry between the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers is contested at the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Although the men's basketball rivalry had died down after the 1990s, it returned in 2013 as both schools again met in the UAAP basketball championship series. The rivalry had also been apparent in women's volleyball where the two teams are frequent finalists in the UAAP Volleyball Championship and the Shakey's V-League.

Filomeno Codiñera Jr., also known as Boy Codiñera, was a Filipino baseball and softball player. He has represented both the men's national softball and baseball teams of the Philippines. He played as an outfielder in softball and as a third baseman in baseball.
