Avoca is located at latitude 30.578 and longitude -83.027 and its elevation is 118 feet. Surrounding state roads include State Road 150 and State Road 390. The surrounding US Highway is Highway 129.
Avoca was a turpentine/farming community for many years. Farming and plantation operations created the small community and Turpentine maintained it later. In 1916, it was a prosperous community located in Hamilton County Florida around the junction of CR 150 and US HWY 129. Hebron Cemetery supported the community and Church was held at Bakers Mill. Miller's Crossing was a few miles from Avoca. Leonard Ezekiel "L.E." Miller had a substantial plantation farm there and housed the commissary or general store where Boots (Brogans), Jeans, mostly overalls, Georgia knits (socks) and hickory striped shirts were sold and nearly uniform wear in the area. The community had several schools in a four to five mile area.

It is named after the essayist and social critic John Ruskin. Miller established the short-lived Ruskin College. It was one of the Ruskin Colleges.

Within the town there is one school, Lawrence Academy (Private), which was founded in 1968 and is located on Avoca Farm Road. In the middle of the town is the post office, with the zip code 27957. Avoca Incorporated is a large company, located where the original Avoca Plantation existed, that profits from botanical extraction. Salmon Creek twists and turns through the wooded area of Merry Hill and opens up to the Albemarle Sound. This is known as the Mouth of Salmon Creek. There is currently a golf course called Scotch Hall Preserve in Merry Hill, built in 2009, that overlooks the Mouth of Salmon Creek and reaches out into the Albemarle Sound. The course was designed by retired professional golfer Arnold Palmer.
New York State Route 415 (NY 415) is a state highway located entirely within Steuben County, New York, in the United States. It is a 42.83-mile (68.93 km) north–south trunk road that parallels in part, the Cohocton River, Interstate 86 (I-86) and I-390. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 414 in the city of Corning. Its northern terminus is at a junction with NY 15 and NY 21 south of the village of Wayland. NY 415 serves several villages bypassed by the Southern Tier Expressway and I-390, such as Bath and Cohocton. The road also runs concurrent with New York State Bicycle Route 17 from its southern terminus to County Route 70A (CR 70A) in Avoca.
