Awaka is a relatively small town, situated on a small hill about four miles north-east of Owerri, capital city of Imo State, southeastern Nigeria. It is one of the towns that make host the Alaenyi clan, others include the surrounding Ihitta-Ogada, Egbu, Naze and Owere-Nchi-Ise.

Awaka shares borders with Umuorii Uratta, Ezeogba Emekuku and Umuawuka Emii. Popularly referred to as "Ancient Town", Awaka is largely known for corn production. [1] The species of this tropical crop grown by Awaka people had been long held as distinct from other species with well arranged light yellow grains on a cob that fattens towards the base. Three villages make up Awaka, namely Nde-Egbelu, Umuodu and Amuzi. [2] The town was ruled by His Royal Highness Eze Akujobi David-Osuagwu the Ezikoche II, beginning in the mid 1990s after a protracted tussle following the death of HRH Eze Chris David-Osuagwu (Ezikoche I).[ citation needed ]

Demographics

Awaka people are predominantly Christian with a large presence of Roman Catholics and Anglican faithful who worship at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and the Christ's Anglican Church respectively.

Two primary schools, each close to one of the two major churches.

Awaka hosts a customary court and two privately owned hotels.

A legendary tree is found at the centre of one of the villages, Nde-Egbelu called the "ọbụ". This tree has a large trunk and is well researched by Prof ADW Acholonu in his autobiography.

Culture

Traditionally, Awaka people celebrate Ịta Ọka, a day set aside to thank God for blessing the land with corn. Women prepare various delicacies with corn and entertain guests at their homes.

The villages have elected village heads. A system of organisation is based on age grades. The highest authority level is the Council of Elders (Nde Oha) comprising the eldest in each kindred, who must be conferred as an "Oha" by Oha Awaka Traditional Council.

Okpofe is an autonomous community located in Ezinihitte Mbaise local government area (LGA), in Imo State, Nigeria with common boundaries with Itu, Ezeagbogu, Ihitte, Amumara and Oboama autonomous communities. Okpofe is the centre of the Ezinihitte Mbaise clan, and it is the only town in Ezinihitte Mbaise that does not share a boundary with another local government area in Imo State. It is quite a unique town in Ezinihitte. It is also on record that the Roman Catholic Church was first established in Okpofe town in the year 1918 when the first crop of missionaries brought to the town held the first Catholic mass at the shrine of Inyama Oguegbe Ajero, who himself was the Second Paramount King of the ancient town after Chief Mbagwu. Ezinihitte Mbaise The Anglican Juniorate in Mbaise is located in Okpofe too.

Owerri Municipal is a Local Government Area in Imo State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the city of Owerri. It has an area of 58 km² and a population of 127,213 according to the 2006 census. The postal code of the area is 460. Owerri city sits at the intersection of roads from Port Harcourt, Onitsha, Aba, Orlu, Okigwe and Umuahia. It is also the trade center for palm products, corn [maize], yams and cassava [manioc]. Eke Ukwu Owere market is the main market in Owerri Municipal.

Eziorsu is an autonomous community on the South bank of the Oguta Lake, southeastern Nigeria. Its one of the foremost territories that witnessed western or European expedition during colonization and used as a gateway by the British to advance the Igboland further. As at the 1991 census in Nigeria, the population of Eziorsu was estimated at 14,560. It is one of the Oil and Gas producing communities in Imo State, being the second largest producing community in Oguta L.G.A after Izombe. The community promised to continue to protect and support Addax Petroleum at all times, especially as the Company remained the best partner to the communities in terms of best practices in corporate social responsibility.

Eziobodo is an ancient kingdom located in today's Owerri-West local government, Owerri - Imo State Nigeria. Eziobodo is an igbo-speaking community with a population of over 15,000 locals.

The 2019 Imo State gubernatorial election in Nigeria occurred on 9 March 2019. PDP's Emeka Ihedioha polled 38.29% of the total votes, defeating AA's Uche Nwosu who got 26.66% of popular votes, and several minor party candidates. Out of 27 LGAs, Ihedioha won in 11, while Nwosu won in 10.
