Axel Marcel Addy served as Minister of Commerce and Industry under Ellen Johnson Sirleaf from April 2013 to January 2018. While in office,he focused on investment diversification,agriculture,small and medium businesses,and integration into the world economy. He was Chief Negotiator during Liberia's successful accession to the World Trade Organization. [2]
Liberia,officially the Republic of Liberia,is a country on the West African coast. It is bordered by Sierra Leone to its northwest,Guinea to its north,Ivory Coast to its east,and the Atlantic Ocean to its south and southwest. It has a population of around 5 million and covers an area of 111,369 square kilometers (43,000 sq mi). English is the official language,but over 20 indigenous languages are spoken,reflecting the country's ethnic and cultural diversity. The country's capital and largest city is Monrovia.
The Unity Party (UP) is a political party in Liberia that was started in 1984 by Edward B. Kesselly,also its first standard bearer. Officially founded at Buchanan in Grand Bassa County,the party was established on 27 July 1985. The Unity Party participated in the first elections after the 1980 coup,running against President Samuel Doe in October 1985. The party has remained active in Liberian politics since and was,until 2017,the ruling party.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is a Liberian politician who served as the 24th president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018. Sirleaf was the first elected female head of state in Africa.
Charles Walker Brumskine was a Liberian politician and attorney. He was the leader of the Liberty Party and came third in the 2005 presidential election. He challenged incumbent Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for the Presidency in 2011. He was also the senior partner of Brumskine &Associates,a leading Liberian law firm.
Charles Cecil Dennis Jr was a Liberian political figure who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs under President William Tolbert from 1973 until the 1980 Liberian coup d'état led by Samuel Doe. Along with 11 other current and former members of the Liberian government,he was tried by a military tribunal and executed by firing squad ten days after the coup.
General elections were held in Liberia on 11 October 2011,with a second round of the presidential election on 8 November. Cyvette M. Gibson is the tenth Mayor of Paynesville,Liberia. Mayor Gibson has been a community advocate for many years,working over the past 17 years in women's empowerment,legal,and city administration in Liberia and the United States. She was appointed as acting Mayor on November 14,2012;the youngest mayor in the country. Gibson has focused her administration on improving and empowering communities in Paynesville by providing infrastructure,education,access to employment and entrepreneurship,and basic services such as water,energy,sanitation,housing,health,and safety.
Corruption is endemic at every level of Liberian society,making Liberia one of the most politically corrupt nations in the world. As such,corruption is not specifically a punishable crime under Liberian law,which further exacerbates the nature of corruption present in the country. When President Sirleaf took office in 2006,she announced that corruption was “the major public enemy.”
An epidemic of Ebola virus disease occurred in Liberia from 2014 to 2015,along with the neighbouring countries of Guinea and Sierra Leone. The first cases of virus were reported by late March 2014. The Ebola virus,a biosafety level four pathogen,is an RNA virus discovered in 1976.
Organizations from around the world responded to the West African Ebola virus epidemic. In July 2014,the World Health Organization (WHO) convened an emergency meeting with health ministers from eleven countries and announced collaboration on a strategy to co-ordinate technical support to combat the epidemic. In August,they declared the outbreak an international public health emergency and published a roadmap to guide and coordinate the international response to the outbreak,aiming to stop ongoing Ebola transmission worldwide within 6–9 months. In September,the United Nations Security Council declared the Ebola virus outbreak in the West Africa subregion a "threat to international peace and security" and unanimously adopted a resolution urging UN member states to provide more resources to fight the outbreak;the WHO stated that the cost for combating the epidemic will be a minimum of $1 billion.

The 1980 Liberian coup d'état happened on April 12,1980,when President William Tolbert was overthrown and murdered in a violent coup. The coup was staged by an indigenous Liberian faction of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) under the command of Master Sergeant Samuel Doe.
