Ayse Birsel (born 1964) is an industrial designer and author, [1] best known for her design work with Herman Miller. [2]
Ayse Birsel was born in Izmir, Turkey. Birsel received her undergraduate degree in Industrial Design at Middle East Technical University (METU). [3]
Birsel came to New York City in 1986 to attend Pratt Institute on a Fulbright Scholarship and graduated in 1989 with a master's degree in Design. [4]
Birsel married Bibi Seck in 2004. They have two daughters, one son, and live in New York.
Birsel started her career by collaborating with Bruce Hannah and American contract furnishing company Knoll to design the Orchestra desk accessories collection. [5]
Birsel then worked with the Japanese sanitaryware company TOTO in Tokyo designing the first American introduced washlet (a combination toilet seat and bidet). The Zoë Washlet won numerous design awards including ID Magazine’s Gold Award in 1996. [6]
Upon her return to New York in 1993, Birsel began her own product design studio, Olive 1:1. [7] The studio evolved into a design and innovation studio called Birsel+Seck [8] that she currently runs with partner, Bibi Seck. [9]
In 2015 Birsel authored a book titled Design the Life You Love, with Penguin Random House. [10] The book shares Birsel's design process to help people design their life and work respectively. [11]
Birsel is also a frequent speaker on human-centered design, giving talks at TEDx in Cannes [12] and Design Indaba in Cape Town. [13]

Introduced in 1994, it was designed by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf and has received numerous accolades for its industrial design. It is featured in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. It has been cited as the best-selling individual office chair in the United States with over 8 million sold.
Washlet is a Japanese line of cleansing toilet seats manufactured and sold by the company Toto. The electronic bidet features a water spray element for genital and anal cleansing. and commonly appears on toilets all over Japan. The device was released in June 1980 and as of January 2022, Toto has sold more than 60 million units.

Africa's many diverse countries are sources of vibrant design with African design influences visible in historical and contemporary art and culture around the world. The study of African design is still limited, particularly from the viewpoint of Africans, and the opportunity to expand its current definition by exploring African visual representations and introducing contemporary design applications remains immense.
Ruben Rojas is a Santa Monica-based contemporary artist and designer known for his "Live Through Love" campaign and for co-founding the nonprofit company, Beautify Earth. In 2017, Rojas was included in CBS Los Angeles' list of "Best Los Angeles Artists You Need To Know About," and later that year, the artist gave a TEDx talk about the regenerative power of outdoor art.
