BNS Sheikh Mujib is a full-fledged naval base of the Bangladeshi Navy in Dhaka of Bangladesh. It is one of largest bases in Dhaka of Bangladesh Navy. [1]

History

With the aim of Bangladesh Armed Forces Goal 2030 Bangladesh Navy is continuing to enhance its capabilities by establishing new bases to support the force in large extent especially logistics and information technological support in capital. To full fill the agenda Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina commissioned this full-fledged naval base [2] on November 5, 2018, to be called BNS Sheikh Mujib. [3] Bangladesh Navy treat this installation as crucial to cater the operational needs of the force in the capital.

Functions

The main objective of this naval base is to coordinate disaster response services alongside running their naval information technology programme and naval intelligence training and operating helicopters of the force. Navy helicopters are stationed and maintained as well in this floated base.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Founder and 1st President of Bangladesh

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, often shortened as Sheikh Mujib or Mujib, was a Bangladeshi politician, statesman and Founding Father of Bangladesh who served as the first President and later as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 17 April 1971 until his assassination on 15 August 1975. He is considered to have been the driving force behind the independence of Bangladesh. He is popularly dubbed with the title of "Bangabandhu" by the people of Bangladesh. He became a leading figure in and eventually the leader of the Awami League, founded in 1949 as an East Pakistan–based political party in Pakistan. Mujib is credited as an important figure in efforts to gain political autonomy for East Pakistan and later as the central figure behind the Bangladesh Liberation Movement and the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Thus, he is regarded as the "Jatir Janak" or "Jatir Pita" of Bangladesh. His daughter Sheikh Hasina is the current leader of the Awami League and also the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Tajuddin Ahmad Bangladeshi politician and First Prime Minister of Bangladesh (1925-1975)

Tajuddin Ahmad was a Bengali statesman. He led the Provisional Government of Bangladesh as its prime minister during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and is regarded as one of the most instrumental figures in the birth of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Navy naval warfare branch of the Bangladesh Armed Forces

The Bangladesh Navy is the naval warfare branch of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, responsible for Bangladesh's 118,813 square kilometres (45,874 sq mi) of maritime territorial area, and the defence of important harbours, military bases and economic zones. The primary role of the Bangladesh Navy is to protect the country's economic and military interests at home and abroad. The Bangladesh navy is also a front line disaster management force in Bangladesh, and participates in humanitarian missions abroad. It is a key regional player in counter terrorism efforts, and engages in global peacekeeping with the United Nations.

Armed Forces Day (Bangladesh)

Armed Forces Day is observed in Bangladesh on 21 November. This signifies the day in 1971, when the members of the Bangladesh army, navy and air force were officially united and launched joint operations along with the people against the Pakistan occupation forces. On 16 December 1971, the Pakistani Army of 93,000 surrendered to the allied forces of Bangladesh Forces and Indian Army, ending the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

The Mujib Bahini, or Bangladesh Liberation Force (BLF), was an armed force formed during the Bangladesh Liberation War to fight against Pakistan in 1971. The force was mainly composed of activists drawn from the Awami League and its student front, the Chhatra League. At its height, it had reportedly 13000 members. It was organised with the active assistance of Major General Sujan Singh Uban of the Indian Army. Student League leaders Serajul Alam Khan and Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, Tofael Ahmed, and Abdur Razzaq, MP were the organizers of this special force. Famous business person Anjan Chowdhury was also an active member of this force.

Bangladesh Naval Academy

The Bangladesh Naval Academy is situated at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River at Patenga, Chittagong District, Bangladesh. Bathed by the river Karnaphuli on the east and sheltered on the south by the Bay of Bengal, BNA stands in a panoramic natural picturesque in an isolated landscape of the country. It is surrounded by heart-snatching lush green vegetation in Patenga sea-beach, 14 km south of the city centre of the hustling port city of Chittagong. Bangladesh Naval Academy is well connected by rail, road and air from Dhaka.

Special Warfare Diving and Salvage Bangladesh Navy special operations force

The Special Warfare Diving and Salvage or SWADS is an elite special operational unit of the Bangladesh Navy. Members are professional soldiers and are recruited through the Bangladesh Navy. The SWADS is organized, trained and equipped along the lines of SEAL/UDT teams of the United States Navy SEALs and the Republic of Korea Navy UDT/SEAL.

Provisional Government of Bangladesh 1971-72 government-in-exile of Bangladesh after declaring independence from Pakistan

The Provisional Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, popularly known as the Mujibnagar Government, was established following the declaration of independence of East Pakistan on 10 April 1971. Headed by prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad, it was the supreme leadership of the Bangladeshi liberation movement, comprising a cabinet, a diplomatic corps, an assembly, an armed force, and a radio service.

The Mukti Bahini, also known as the Bangladesh Forces, was the guerrilla resistance movement consisting of the Bangladeshi military, paramilitary and civilians during the War of Liberation that transformed East Pakistan into Bangladesh in 1971. An earlier name Mukti Fauj was also used.

Forces Goal 2030 Military modernization program

Forces Goal 2030 is a military modernization program of the Bangladesh Armed Forces which began in 2009 and revised in 2017, designed to the capabilities of the three services of the Bangladesh armed forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The primary focus of the modernization program is the reformation of the military organization, expansion of the forces, the transformation of the indigenous defense sector to support research and manufacturing, and acquisition of modern military weapons. The requirement for modernization was realized in the aftermath of 2008 Bangladesh–Myanmar naval standoff later resulting in Bangladesh's favour. One of the primary objectives of the modernization program is to develop a three-dimensional force capable of conducting multi-platform warfare.

Moazzem Hossain was a Pakistan Navy Lieutenant Commander and an accused of the Agartala Conspiracy Case. He was killed by the Pakistan Army during Bangladesh Liberation war.

BNS Sheikh Hasina is a new naval base being developed for the Bangladesh Navy. This will be the first full-fledged submarine base of Bangladesh Navy.

BNS Sher-e-Bangla is the first full-fledged naval base being developed for the Bangladesh Navy as part of the development vision of Bangladesh Armed Forces Forces Goal 2030. With an area of 500 acre this will be the largest naval base of Bangladesh Navy. Of those 200 acres of land for the naval base and 300 acres of land is going on for naval aviation and submarine operations. It is named after the 1st Prime Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Huq, who is nicknamed as Sher-e-Bangla or Tiger of Bengal.

S M Abul Kalam Azad is a two star Admiral of Bangladesh and the incumbent Commander Bangladesh Navy Fleet. Earlier he held a range of salient appointments, namely Chairman of Chittagong Port Authority., Chairman Mongla port Authority, Director of Naval Intelligence & Naval Administrative Authority Dhaka.
