The Padma Vibhushan is the second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "exceptional and distinguished service", without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex. The award criteria include "service in any field including service rendered by Government servants" including doctors and scientists, but excluding those working with the public sector undertakings. As of 2020, the award has been bestowed on 314 individuals, including seventeen posthumous and twenty-one non-citizen recipients.

It is the leading tertiary care hospital of the region and caters to patients from all over Punjab, J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana. Apart from the clinical services, PGI also provides training in almost all disciplines of Medicine including post graduate and post doctoral degrees, diploma and fellowships. There are more than 50 such training courses in the institute. Since it is a post graduate institute, it does not have facilities for undergraduate MBBS courses. It is ranked 2nd among medical universities in India in 2021 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework.
Satpal Singh, also known as Guru Satpal, is a wrestling coach and former wrestler of India. He was a Gold Medalist in 1982 Asian Games and a Bronze medalist in 1974 Asian Games. Today he is better known as the coach of Olympic medal winners Sushil Kumar and Ravi Kumar Dahiya.
A. Marthanda Pillai- MS (Neuro), MNAMS (Neuro), FRCS, is an Indian neurosurgeon. In 2011 he was the recipient of a Padma Shri Award for medicine. He is the first former National President and former Vice-President of the Indian Medical Association in Kerala State to receive this national award. He led the protest against proposed National Medical Commission Bill for IMA.

Babulal Patodi was an Indian social worker and freedom activist. He was a senior member of the Indian National Congress and the president of the Indore Congress Committee from 1949–50 and 1953-54. He also served as M.L.A. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, in 1991. He died on 25 January 2012, aged 92, succumbing to old age illnesses and survived by his one son Narendra Patodi. A statue has been installed at top Gomatgiri hills in his honour.

In 2017, the Government of India awarded Naik with Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian honour. He is a Right-handed batsman and also a wicket-keeper.
