Bakulu people (also Ikolu, Ikulu, Bekulu) are a people found in Zangon Kataf, Kachia and Kauru Local Government Areas of southern Kaduna State of Middle Belt, Nigeria. [1] They speak a Plateau language called Kulu. [2] They call their land Akulu.

Religion

A majority of the Bakulu people were reportedly adherents of traditional religion, numbering about 29.5% of the entire population, while Muslims number 0.5% and Christians with 70.0% of the population. Among the Christians, Independents have 60.0%, Protestants 15.0% and Roman Catholics 45.0%. [3]

Politics

The paramount ruler of the Bakulu people is addressed as "Agwom" (or Agam). [4] The current monarch is His Highness (HRH) Agwom Yohanna Sidi Kukah, Agwom Akulu II, who is a younger brother to Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto. The Agwom Akulu is the head of the Akulu Traditional Council of Akulu (Ikulu) Chiefdom, whose headquarters is at Fadan Ikulu [5] in Kamuru. [6]

The land of the Bakulu people is known as Akulu ( Hausa: Ikulu). Ikulu is one of the 11 subdivisions of Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of southern Kaduna State. It is in turn divided into the following: [7]

A prominent Bakulu son, Rev. Fr. Matthew Kukah decried in an interview with This Day News that the Bakulu alongside the Anghan are the smaller of the groups in the local government with each having just a ward only despite their numbers. [8]

The Kulu language, Ikulu, also known as Ankulu or Ikolu, is a Plateau language of Nigeria. It is spoken by the Bakulu, found in the Zangon Kataf, Kachia and Kauru Local Government Areas of Kaduna State.

The Jju people, or Ba̠jju (exonyms: Hausa: Kajje; Tyap: A̱jhyuo, are an ethnic group found in the Middle Belt area of Nigeria. The word Ba̠jju is a short for "Ba̠nyet Jju" which simply means "Jju People" and is used to refer to the speakers of the Jju language found in the Ka̠jju, the homeland of the Jju people. They are found in the Southern part of Kaduna State, chiefly in Kachia, Zangon Kataf, Jama'a and in Kaduna South Local Government Areas. Ba̠jju people are also commonly known as "Kaje" which is a pejorative name used to refer to both the Jju people and Jju language by the larger Hausa people who could not pronounce the name Ka̠jju well. The Ba̠jju people are predominantly farmers, hunters, blacksmiths and petty traders.

Matthew Hassan Kukah is the current bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto.

The Kafanchan Peace Declaration is a peace accord signed by five local government areas in southern Kaduna State, Nigeria. The local government areas involved in the process were the Sanga, Kachia, Kaura, Zangon Kataf and Jema'a. The five areas include 29 ethnic communities headed by 32 chairs. The declaration has been signed on 23 March 2016 in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The peace accord has been facilitated by the Swiss-based organization Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD).

The Anghan people are an ethnic group found in Zangon Kataf and Kachia LGAs of southern Kaduna State, in the Middle Belt area of Nigeria.

The genesis of the 1992 Zangon Kataf crises could at least be traced to the onset of the British imperial regime in the Northern Region of Nigeria, in which the Atyap people began reporting the loss of land to the Hausas. In 1922, it was reported that a large piece of land was acquired by the Emir of Zaria, Dalhatu Uthman Yero, who failed to compensate the indigenous population of the region. In 1966, the land was provided to the Hausa trading settlement in the heart of Mabatado, called "Zangon Kataf", by the emir, Muhammad Usman. The Atyap resided within the district, in the Zaria Province of the Northern Region of, initially, British Nigeria, which became independent Nigeria. It was to remain utilized as a marketplace, where the indigenous Atyap people were banned from trading pork and beer by the settlers.

Yohanna Sidi Kukah is the incumbent monarch of Akulu chiefdom of the Bakulu people in southern Kaduna State, Middle Belt, Nigeria. He is also known by the title Agwom Akulu II.

The Atsam people are found mainly in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Middle Belt (central) Nigeria. They speak the Atsam language, an East Kainji language. Their headquarters are in the town of Damakasuwa, a few kilometres from Chawai, west of the city of Jos.

On March 11, 2023, armed bandits attacked the village of Ungwan Wakili in Zangon Kataf LGA, Kaduna State, Nigeria, killing seventeen people.
